TG16 wont read HUcards/only shows a white/blue/green screen

Post by Teknoman »

I just received a region modded TG16/CD with super system card, turbotap, and one controller from ebay today. Although the description said it was working (showed screens off a TV from the system playing the two cards that came with the system, Legendary Axe and Momotaro turbo, as well as 3.0 boot screen and the gate of thunder CD running), after hooking everything up, i'm having some hucard boot problems

When putting in Legendary Axe, Super System 3.0, or Momotaro (with switch on of course), I just end up getting a solid white, light blue, yellowish-green, or green screen with no sound. Gave the cards a good cleaning, and got the same result. I searched around, and it seems like the slot might need cleaning, but i'm not really sure the best way to go about doing that. It couldnt be the power base or anything like that could it? I have the system connected via composite through the CD rom drive/base.

So far i've tried using a q-tip/slight amount of alcohol to try and swab the inside of the slot, but i'm not sure how well that would work for cleaning purposes, since i'm not sure if its hitting the actual connections.

The CD drive works just fine, since it outputs music through the TV i've got it connected to, and from what i've read...a solid screen shows that the system works, but is just having trouble reading the card.

EDIT: On closer inspection, I noticed one of the gamebit screws on the bottom back right of the TG16 is missing, and the back end of the system is slightly more raised than the rest...I wonder if thats causing the cards not to connect?

The screws for the case won't matter. The board inside is inside a metal cage and there's plenty of room, the case being off a bit shouldn't matter. So other than a possible indication that the modding was sloppily done, ignore that for the moment. Very good chance the games are going in too far in the slot. Back them back out until the power lock just barely clears the card, then turn it on.

Like Hobie said, try pushing them in all the way and backing them out just a touch. My Core Grafx had a blue screen whenever I put a card in and that was the fix.

Unfortunately, even after trying that, it still doesn't work. So I guess it could be something that went wrong with the mod somewhere between shipping? Either way, I guess i'll just try to get a refund via ebay buyer protection, and start fresh by searching for a modded PC engine duo-r after learning abit more about the systems.

Well, try to work with the seller, first, but yeah, eBay's protection is your backup.

Yeah, I really didnt want to have to go the protection route, but he doesnt offer any refunds...didnt have anything to replace the TG16 with, and didnt reply after asking whether or not he did the mod himself and could fix the system.

Definitely communicated with and tried to work things out before that...especially since I had the luck of finding both Winds of Thunder and the Gate of Thunder 4 in 1 for a really good price.

:? Of course now i've got to wait to actually play them.
