So I went ahead and started to try playing a DVD today on my PS3 randomly and it didn't play. Thinking something was wrong with the disk I went ahead and tired to play a PS3 game (Tales of Graces f) and it never loaded. At first I thought something was wrong with the disk so I ejected the game and put it back in. It appeared to start loading up due to the lights flashing on the PS3 then just nothing.
No icon under "Games" so I went ahead and put in another game and still nothing. So then I got mad and put in a Blu-Ray disk (Ghostbusters) and still didn't get anything under "Video".
So now I'm starting to think that the drive is broken or something else. It was working last week when I played the same game (Tales of Graces f) and didn't notice anything was wrong with it. Everything else works on it because I went on Playstation Home before I noticed this happened. I also went ahead and updated the PS3 just in case but still nothing. So is there something else I'm missing or is my drive most likely broken?
Playstation 3 60GB won't read disks.
Re: Playstation 3 60GB won't read disks.
The drive went out most likely the same thing happened to me last year. If it is still under warranty I would get in touch with Sony and go from there. If it is out of warranty you just need to replace the drive. I had to replace my drive it is actually a simple fix try looking on craigslist or ebay cheap broken systems to replace the drive with. I'm sure you can find some videos on youtube on how to do it yourself to see if you feel comfortable doing it yourself.

I bought a PS3 once that had suffered from this same problem. When it arrived I performed a full system restore from the recovery menu and the drive started working again.
I'm not saying this will work for you, but it's worth a shot. You would probably want to back up all your data first (if that's possible lol).

Yeah, I already did a system recovery on my PS3 and it didn't work. It looks like I will have to find a new drive to fix it.
Re: Playstation 3 60GB won't read disks.
If the PS3 console still has the deterrent stickers intact, you can get a Sony Factory Service repair, an exact same model exchange. This is costly, an option if you don't want to risk the repair yourself. Look up the Sony Site for details about the Factory Exchange.Konacha wrote:Yeah, I already did a system recovery on my PS3 and it didn't work. It looks like I will have to find a new drive to fix it.

Considering how simple it is to replace the drive, and how cheap they are (~$30-$50) doing it yourself is a potential option (you could also replace the thermal paste while you're at it. It'll help a lot!)
Potential option. But, the safer route is likely the Sony path ... however, if they replace your machine ... it will be an RMA'd PS3. Be aware of that.

What is RMA'd?
The drive replacement is extremely simple after you get the system apart. You just need to make sure you remove the board attached to your drive and put it on the new one which IIRC is only five screws and three ribbons. I have no real technical knowledge and I was able to do it myself.

It's a previously returned and refurbished PS3. (RMA = Returned Merchandize Authorization)
And it's very likely it would have been a YLOD issue.

Re: Playstation 3 60GB won't read disks.
There is a store near me that fixes systems that I'm thinking about taking it too. Normally with stuff like the N64 or NES or even the Dreamcast I can normally fix if it doesn't deal with the motherboard or stuff like that. They fixed my DS a while back at a very reasonable price so I'm thinking it will be easier to just take it to them. The reason being is that the PS3 is still pretty new and I don't want to screw up taking it apart like I did with my old PS2 (and broke it) so I just feel better if I took it somewhere with people that at least know what they are doing since with me it's normally a crap shoot.
Re: Playstation 3 60GB won't read disks.
You might try standing the PS3 up. I know mine will only read disks when it is standing. If your laser is dying, it might at least buy you some more time before you have to replace the drive. Another option if you're comfortable with it, is trying to replace just the laser assembly, as it might be a bit cheaper than replacing the whole drive.
