Deus Ex GOTY User Setting Issues? Control Mappings/Bindings?

Post by optmusprimenumber »

Hello all! I recently got Steam and have been enjoying the old Quake games and Deus Ex. I'm not much of a pc gamer otherwise so the whole a, w, s, d thing, while manageable, isn't really ideal for me. I figured out how to navigate Quake using an xbox controller (forward/back/strafe) while looking with the mouse (it's awesome) and I learned about console commands and autoexec.cfg's and got Quake and Quake II set up to my liking (though I had to reverse the left sticks x axis in the gamepad properties to strafe properly :? ). Because of that and having played DE: Invisible War on xbox I am interesting in playing Deus Ex GOTY with similar controls.

I figured out how to activate the Joystick in ...DeusEx/System/Default and I was able to disable the right stick (its deadzone is sloppy and as you might guess a joystick doesn't mimic a mouse too well - granted i didn't adjust the look speeds at all). Now here comes the problem:

Every time I try to map commands to the other buttons..
In the in-game control settings screen, the Default file, the DefUser file, and the User file... the *options settings* default upon returning to the game *and the Default and DefUser changes have no effect (except for the joystick)*, it sucks. I must be missing something but google isn't helping (there seems there isn't much discussion on this matter), perhaps you guys can help.

Quick disclaimer- I know, I know, why would I want to not play with a keyboard and mouse? Well, besides from aches and cramps in my hand, I just don't like it. And from what I've learned thus far what I'm after is doable. Thanks for any help! :)

I've never heard of that happening before.

You could try running the stuff on this site, which I'd recommend regardless of your control issues.

If the settings are contained in a CFG or INI file, try setting them with notepad and then making the file read only so that the game cannot revert them or replace the file. Otherwise I'd see about using a program that maps the joystick stuff to keys. Then you'd be all set for any game.

Think I'll have to give that^ a shot.

And just to be more specific - when I have the game running and I go into Keyboard & Mouse settings, I assign, for example, Joy Left POV (Left D-Pad) to open the Inventory Screen, I click OK and go back to the game and it doesn't work, so I go back into the control settings to find that my changes have been reset..

And for some reason, no matter what I assign the Joy buttons to do in the User and DefUser files (ex. JoyPovLeft=ShowInventoryWindow), the game doesn't seem to refer to those changes.. except the JoySTICK changes..

Sorry if I'm being redundant, I tend to find myself getting goofy responses to my questions in the non internet world so I'm just making sure I'm being clear.

And yes, I could probably play the game without my dpad activating screens.. but it would be SO COOL.

Additionally, I have successfully assigned the Left Joystick Button to Crouch and the left trigger to Jump, ...perhaps the game doesn't actually like the POV buttons, but since they're in the User files and the user files are reminiscent of a "console" I'm stumped

*Edit - I just played around with the ingame settings a bit and found that they game will let me assign other joy buttons to open the Inventory screen. Tho it's really touchy and I have to do a deliberate quick press or the Inventory screen flashes on and off, weird. But as I was saying, it won't let me use the POV's, which as far as I can tell are just more buttons.

Thanks again for any help :)

It really sounds like it just doesn't like you using the hat controls for anything. As for the issues you're having with inventory on other buttons, I wonder if it has something to do with the pressure sensitive buttons sending odd signals that the game interprets as a double press.

Maybe install a Joystick to Keyboard emulator?

Yea I was thinking that too, both things actually... it's being a pain in my ass. It just seems funny that the POV directions are in the config files and yet they don't work.

...

I'll have to look into the joystick to keyboard emulation... I'm guessing it makes the computer think I'm pressing keys when I press Joy buttons(?) Any particular ones I should search for??

Depending on the maker of the stick it might have one that came with it. My old Logitech pad came with mapping software. I'm using the last free version of XPadder to let me use a 360 pad for The Binding of Isaac. I'm not sure how much it costs for an up to date version.

Personally I think it's pretty remarkable that the game even has joystick support at all. It came out during that period where FPS controls had pretty well solidified as being keyboard + mouse (as opposed to early Doom days where people legitimately used joysticks) and there were no PC gamepads that were worth having, especially for FPS's.
