I just got a ps2 with a 40 gig hard drive and final fantasy XI online to go with it. I managed to pick up 10 games with it a gamecube and 4 games a gameboy pocket with game and watch gallery, all for 10.00. Anyways just got excited about my finds from a neighbor. The ps2 with the harddrive will load up and then the power light blinks, the fans blows hard and then it shuts off. I do it again and the same thing. After a few tries it finally works. Now is there something wrong with the ps2 or hard drive?
Also can I still go online with the network adapter?
What games support the hard drive?
I loaded up my street fighter alpha collection and I installed it to the hard drive and the games are fater no load times and plays smoother than ever. So now I want to know what else supports it.

Re: need some ps2 help
Maybe the hard drive is not seated all the way? Pop the Network adapter off and push the drive against the adapter. You can pick up a larger 250gb Maxtor IDE cheap.
This is what i really like about the Fat PS2 over a backwards compatible PS3, the hard drive fast loading convenience for PS2 games. Not all, but most PS2 games install fine. What are you using to boot up the hard drive?

Re: need some ps2 help
it seems something Hardware wise is causing it shut off , like a Memory Card or Network Adapter or Controller or Hard Drive.
ive read when PS2's detect a problem it will shutdown to protect you from any damage to the Console.
try booting a Original Disc and if that works it seems its the Memory Card or Network Adapter or Controller or Hard Drive , not the Console at fault as it can run games without shutting down.
Also is the HDD activity led starting to access and then shutting down ?
btw im not sure what Loader your using but below is a HDloader Compatibility List which is one of multiple Loaders out there

Tell us more of this process with a little more detail , the Loader your using for example.........as it can help determine whats is causing the problem. The ps2 with the harddrive will load up and then the power light blinks, the fans blows hard and then it shuts off

Re: need some ps2 help
Confusing as it sounds, you still need a modchip to copy imports to hard drive directly from the ps2.
hard drive only breaks region lock for games contained on it. not installing them.

Re: need some ps2 help
It detects the disc tray eject, no mod chip is needed if a Flip Top or Slide Tool is used. I don't like the slide tool so mounted Flip Tops on both of my Fats. Once installed an Import game is Region Free. As for game compatibility I have found a work around for games such as Battle Front, Half Life and Scar Face. All this is covered in the PS2 Hard Drive Guide at my signature link.theclaw wrote:Confusing as it sounds, you still need a modchip to copy imports to hard drive directly from the ps2.

Put the vaccuum cleaner to use. Might be dusty in there and that might overheat/error it.
Great find. Good luck with your set up. Do know that alot of games can be forced to 480p or widescreen with elfs (not yet at the same time, but people are working on it.)

Re: need some ps2 help
I cleaned the filters on the ps2 and took the hard drive out and put it back in and it works fine. I don't want to mod the ps2 at all I just want to know what games use the hard drive for a purpose. I also don't think I can go and play online anymore with anyone since I think people dont go online anymore with the ps2.

35 titles total, but cut out sports titles and SOCOM and you're left with fewer than ten.
