New PS3 model on the way?

Post by BoringSupreez »

I was just thinking a day or two ago while looking at my PS3 Slim that even though it's supposed to be "slim," it's actually still rather large. And if Sony's gonna do the whole 10-year lifespan thing, they ought to make a smaller version. Looks like they may be thinking my way.

I'm hoping that it is an even slimmer model. And that a white version is released in the US or Japan. :D bring it on.
My B/S/T thread! :)

Hopefully there is a price drop to go a long with it. There should be, if they can shrink the old tech down , they should be able to shrink the price tag.

If they shrank the size even further, and made a white version, I'd sell my PS3 and get a new one. At least, as long as they didn't cut any features I care about.

I have a 1st Generation PS3 120gb Slim i got in early 2010, im actually looking forward to seeing this even NEWER SLIM model, heres hoping for a 1tb version

Also face it guys, they wont be backwards compatible, its just not something they care about, because it will just raise the cost of development and final retail.

The only reason Phat PS3's were Backwards compatible at launch of the PS3, was to ease the transition from PS2 to PS3 for potential buyers, not to mention new PS2 games were still being released.

I mean look at the Wii, it no longer has backwards compatible, Nintendo has nothing to gain from the GameCube used sales, and most people dont buy a Wii to play GameCube games.

The Same goes for the DS with GBA compatibility, why would they keep putting that, it just raises development costs on a dead format.

This in fact kinda makes me think that they won't do it but then again they might anyway. The Playstation 3 has been on the market for 6 years without any hint of a 4. That's a heck of a long time (when it had been 5 years before the announcement of 3). If anything, this might be a new revision to ease people into the Playstation 4 like they did with the first and second Playstations.

The only reason for the original slim model is from what I heard that sales were not as strong on the old phat models. If they did do this I'm sure we should hear something about the Playstation 4 in the not to distance future.

Doesn't matter to me, I'm still very happy with my old 60GB Phat Playstation 3 (though I have upgraded the hard drive) that plays Playstation 2 games.

Eh, the Slim is a better Playstation 3 and Blu-ray player than the phat. Far quieter, runs cooler, actually bitstreams HD audio if you wish...

They could probably have just revised the internals, but my guess is that the new case is cheaper to make, in addition to being classier (IMO). A major motherboard revision may allow for cutting down on the total materials needed yet again.

I'm not sure what they could make a new model do better though, short of restoring features. I'd buy a third PS3 if it meant PS2 compatibility in a quiet, cool-running model, but I really doubt they're doing that.

As I said, it was what I heard but I wasn't 100% sure since I didn't go and research it to death, though granted it will be a cost-cutting measure I would imagine if they re-design the motherboard but also I've notice companies normally introduce a new version of their systems to help people ease into the next gen systems better.
