Same deal as my last thread. Got an awesome HTPC and looking for high speed, shiny, flashy, intense racers.
I'm a big fan of the F-Zero series, so something along those lines would be good. Not a big fan of overly realistic racers such as Gran Turismo, but that's not to say I'm excluding racers that involve real modern day vehicles. Mario Kart on SNES and N64 are other favourites of mine, so something cartoony and fun multiplayer racers where you're not necessarily just worrying about coming in first but also firing down your opponents is welcome too.
Just looking for some suggestions as to what's good as I'm kind of out of touch with modern gaming. Many thanks again for the suggestions for modern PC fighters, got myself SF X Tekken this weekend and it rocks!
Cheers!
Suggestions for Shiny New School Racers on PC
Re: Suggestions for Shiny New School Racers on PC
Trackmania still has a free version and is probably something you'd like.
The PC version of Blur is $3.63 on Amazon right now, or you could wait for it to go on sale on Steam again. Has combat driving and not too realistic physics. Split/Second is also a fun title that has combat elements that you can often find for cheap.
Burnout Paradise is about $10 on Amazon, or will probably be under $10 at some point during the Steam summer sale. Any Burnout title includes events with aggressive driving, ones with stunts, and so on. Paradise is structured as a free-roaming game with events you can trigger at the stoplights. Arcade style racing that's a blast to play.
The various Need for Speed games are solid too, and usually very cheap on sale. The style varies between the titles though. Some go for a more realistic feel, others not so much.

Also, YES to Trackmania, yes to Blur, yes to Split/Second.
I could never get Burnout: Paradise to work on my Win 7 system.
Other modern racers worth your while:
GRID
DiRT 2
Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010 remake)
RidgeRacer: Unbounded
For some less conventional racers try...
Rock of Ages
SkyDrift
InMomentum
Proun
Mirror's Edge
For some classic racers that are still kind of fun, go to gog.com and try out:
Interstate '76
Megarace 1&2
Slipstream 5000
Motoracer 2

I think OutRun 2006 is the best driving game ever made so I really recommend it

JTs list is pretty complete with all the games I know. But I would add running Dolphin and Fzero GX, or PSCX2 and Wipeout.
I only have one issue with Nitronic Rush and that is that it is single player.

Re: Suggestions for Shiny New School Racers on PC
Downloaded Nitronic Rush last night and will try it out after work today. Am definitely gonna check out Outrun 2006 as I love the oldschool arcade version, and as Need for Speed is pretty much the mainstream racer these days will check out the version mentioned above. Am still in the process of setting up PCSX2 with HyperSpin but Wipeout for PS2 is definitely on my to-do list. I have a Wii for FZero GX so I'm good there. And will also be checking out Trackmania and Blur as I've never heard of them but you guys seem to like them.
Also, I don't suppose they ever made an HD remake of Carmageddon? I've got an XP version which I can't get to run on Win7, but a newer version would be even more awesome.

New Carmageddon is coming soon, you missed the Kickstarter for it. The original will be on GoG soon working on 7. Ive never gotten the original to work on 7.Nyukki wrote:Also, I don't suppose they ever made an HD remake of Carmageddon?
