I posted earlier about a possible beat-em-up/run n' gun thread in the vein of TR or SotM. Was seeing if there was enough interest in something like this to actually warrant organizing a system of some sort to get things going.
I had already said about a bi-monthly thing, since these games are relatively short, so I.E.:
June - Super Double Dragon/Contra
I was also thinking about possibly either throwing a random list to vote from by majority; or going by dev. - June/Capcom July/Taito
I'd like to hear some other ideas, just to see what shakes out.

Re: Beat-em-Up/Run N' Gun Interest Thread
I think we need to vote on the following:
1) How are we competing, fewest credits to complete or highest score on 1 credit. ALL's are not as common on run 'n guns / beat 'em ups as they are on shmups, but they are possible.
2) Should we play as individuals or teams? The one thing I really enjoy about the shmups forums hi-score comp is the team aspect, 4 or 5 members per team, 3 highest scores count. Depending on number of interested parties, i'd suggest going with 3 members per team, 2 highest scores of those 3 count for your team.
3) My thought is run it for maybe 3-4 months (not all year as interest might wane) and let each participating team select a game that we'll play (or 2 or 3, depending on how many teams we get.
Those are my thoughts - that said, i'm down no matter how you run it, fox.

Re: Beat-em-Up/Run N' Gun Interest Thread
I'm definitely up for that!
Regarding mj's comments:
1) I prefer fewest credits, but that's only because I like to make it to the end of a game one way or another, and then improve my skills. The problem with fewest credits though is that there's obviously a point when, if multiple people get to a 1 credit finish, you'd have to start comparing scores anyway. Perhaps we can do both, by noting your high score for your first credit, and from that point simply counting credits to the finish.
2) Either or, but I really like the teams idea. That sounds like a blast.
Of course, whatever the set up, I too am in no matter what.

Awesome. You have some very solid ideas for what we can get going. The teams system sounds cool; and we can have lots of input from who wants to play what. If more people show interest; I think we've got something here.
I like the hi-score/1 credit deal. It'll be madness trying to play Contra or Metal Slug for score.

high scores are problematic for the genre due to farming opportunities in many titles...

Most arcade style ports will have timers telling you to GO! GO!dsheinem wrote:high scores are problematic for the genre due to farming opportunities in many titles...
So long as we stick to arcade mode on the console titles, we should be fine.
If we find a particular game doesn't work for hi-score, we should just keep it out.

Yeah I think high score would work for games like Metal Slug, wouldn't work with Contra...
I'd be down for this kinda thing. Plus it would give me an excuse to try to finish the run n' guns I haven't been able to beat: most Metal Slug games, Super C, Operation C, etc...

Hell yes I'd be down for this.
Metal Slug plays better for score than a lot of shmups do!

I would certainly participate when possible. I'm onboard with arcade style rules.
This would be a great push to dig into the Metal Slug series for me.

As far as beat em ups go, what about Streets of Rage II? It seems pretty basic arcade score styled, and you can't really farm for a higher score to my knowledge.
