Need help with audio issues on Splinter Cell: Conviction

Post by Stark »

So, I have a technical support case open with Ubisoft on this, but so far they've been zero help. I have this game on Steam and can't get audio to work. I have no issue with any other game. Also of note: Ubisoft's stupid little DRM launcher has sound, just not the game! :?

My setup is Windows 7 64-bit, Soundblaster X-Fi using the optical out to a Denon AVR-2807. This game will supposedly output 5.1 surround sound and i wonder if that is causing a conflict of some sort. Anyway, I'd really like to play this game, but don't want to buy it again on console just to do so. Any thoughts anyone?

Try out the Splinter Cell forum on Steam.

Have you checked for updated video drivers? Have you tried putting your PC to just output stereo to see if that makes any difference?

Do you have Logitech (or possibly others) speakers with that fake 'matrix' surround button for expanding stereo sound? When I'm working during the day and I'm turned around at my work PC, I put on that fake surround so that the music I'm listening to is spread across all the speakers as I'm not facing the right direction and would just have it to my left. I've forgotten to turn it off before after work and a few games with surround sound don't play nice if that expander is turned on. I've had some games be very quiet and had one that gave me no sound at all when it was on.

Thanks for the thoughts. I have the latest Video drivers from ATI and Sound Card drivers from Creative.

It is output on the optical port and to a receiver. I'm convinced there is something wrong (ie. some sort of incompatibilty) with the game trying to do surround and the receiver trying to interpret that.

Odd, I fixed it by switching the video resolution from 1024x768 to 1920x1080.

That's what I would have used anyway, I just was trying to figure out the sound and hadn't gotten to it yet. I just thought I'd give it another go tonight and that's the first thing I did and it fixed it. So odd.
