Help naming .bin and .cue files. They won't burn to disk.

Post by bk13 »

Well, I'm downloading everything I can left and right since I got my Saturn modchipped. However, one problem came up, and I think I know what's wrong. When I download a rom, sometimes they are in parts. part1.rar, part2.rar, etc. Now, when I have all parts and I unzip them the files are complete, right? I have a .bin and a .cue. However when I go into CDRwin to do stuff to them so I can burn them, I get an error. The file names have spaces in them, so I think that's causing a problem. However, I can't change the names of the files, as it says that it is being used by another application. I quit Daemon Tools, CDRwin, and anything else that could be interfering, but nothing works.

So, I just copyied the files and named them with underscores instead. Now, I tried to use CDRwin on the copied files, but it still gives me an error! I don't understand how everything works, and what I'm doing, but that's how I'm able to burn the CD's. When I use Nero to burn the .cue files, I need to use CDRwin to convert them, or something.

Anyway, I was wondering if renaming the files is the problem, or if it's just something else.

What is the error you are getting when you try to burn them ?

Does you .cue file point to your .bin ? If not, you can edit the .cue file (open in notepad or your favorite text editor). If it is pointing correctly to your .bin and you are still getting an error, it sounds like your .bin file might be corrupt.

If you have any more specifics, please list them and I will do my best to try and help.

I've noticed that a lot of times when I download files in bin and cue format, the person made the image from a disc drive and not from a location on the computer.

That means the cue sheet will have D:/ then the name of the file.

Also, just renaming the bin and cue files isn't enough. Your cue sheet can be renamed without a problem, however your bin file must match the name contained in the cue sheet (right click it and open it with notepad or another text editor).

More likely you are like me and have more than one partition/hard drive on their pc.
C-F are hard drives on my machine :)

Yea, I do. Most people do, but D is typically the CD/DVD drive. And a lot of times I've noticed when I download files from places, the people just ripped them from their disc drive and made the cue sheet comply with that. Which means I have to go in and just remove the D:/ from the cue sheet. Not a big deal, just annoying. haha

When I got the computer, I only had 1 harddrive in it and 1 optical drive. I left them at their defaults. Now, B, C, E, and F are all harddrives (E is networked and mapped from my other desktop PC) with D, I, and J being optical drives (I and J being virtual).

Worst case scenario, you can mount the binary file with Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% and copy the file over into a new format.

I had to do that with a few DC games. They wouldn't burn properly in Alcohol as bin/cue, so I put them on a virtual drive, copied them over with nero as NRG files and they burnt and played fine. I'm not sure why, but it did work for me. I only recommend this if you have blank CD-Rs to spare just in case it doesn't work for all of them you don't double burn a game that won't burn for you.

Well, I opened up the .cue and made it link to the newly renamed .bin.

The game is Bulk Slash, and the .cue and .bin were named Bulk Slash.cue and Bulk Slash.bin. I renamed it bulk_slash, and like I said, I redirected the .cue to point to the new name for the .bin.

Now, when I mount bulk_slash on Daemon, and do a CDRwin on it, it gives me this message.

Error: Unable to analyze disk layout Illegal track type encountered.

I get the same error when I try to load in the original Bulk Slash file with the spaces.

Here is what the original .cue says

FILE "BULK SLASH.BIN" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE1/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 AUDIO
PREGAP 00:02:00
INDEX 01 14:58:38
TRACK 03 AUDIO
INDEX 00 15:26:74
INDEX 01 15:28:74

The modified one says

FILE "bulk_slash.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE1/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 AUDIO
PREGAP 00:02:00
INDEX 01 14:58:38
TRACK 03 AUDIO
INDEX 00 15:26:74
INDEX 01 15:28:74

Also, I'll add, that I've been having trouble burning other games to disks too. Like I said, usually I'll use Daemon and CDRwin to create a new .cue, and then use the region converter on it if necessary. However, all the new games that I've tried to burn come up with "game disk unsuitable." I'm absolutely sure that I converted all of the files though to (U)! So, I'm not sure what else could be wrong.
