Good Famicom Games That Don't Require Reading Japanese

Post by BurningDoom »

I just got a "Power Player" console at the local Goodwill. I thought it was a cheap NES clone, to my surprise it was instead a cheap Famicom clone complete with a Famicom cartridge slot!

So now I need a list of good Famicom exclusives that don't require reading Japanese to play them (so basically, RPGs are out of the equation), and are affordable.

I'd like to have Famicom exclusives (because I can play the NES counterpart on an actual NES instead) or games that the North American version are super expensive yet the Famicom versions is cheap.

Thanks ahead of time! :D

I recommend Akumajō Special: Boku Dracula-kun, neat little platformer from Konami. It's a spoof on the Castlevania series, but plays more like Mega Man. Awesome game you should check it out.

I did a quick search and didn't come up with any such list. I would love see a list of the great ones we missed. The few I know about and would love are Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti and Akumajō Special: Boku Dracula-kun and Crisis Force. I would love Super Mario Bros 2 if I ever get a disc system, as I don't think its on a cart. I have never tried these yet just going off what I hear.

I just had to add the picture, I love the way this combo looks.

I'm doubting the disc-system would work for me on the "Power Player" famiclone.

Is Moon Crystal rare? It's a great action platformer... but I can't find any ebay listings leading me to believe it's pretty hard to get a copy. :?

It was featured in a Racketboy article some time ago:

There are a few shmups I know of, not sure of their price though:

Terra Cresta
Salamander (Differs from the us Life Force release)
Gradius 2 (no Gofer)
Crisis Force
Star Force (I'm not sure if this got a us release tbh)

Splatterhouse is fun. Just like Dracula-kun is a cute version of Castlevania, the Famicom version of Splatterhouse is a cute version of itself.

These are both pricey and have gone up over the years. I paid $30 for mint complete and $35 for pretty good complete copies respectively of these 5 or 6 years ago. Looks like CF goes for more than that for just a bare cart now.
Star Force (I'm not sure if this got a us release tbh)
It did and was in the early batch of Tecmo NES games.

I bet it would. The only question is whether or not it would have support for some of the more advanced chips (like the ones found in the FC version of Castlevania III).

The Disk System plugs into the Famicom cartridge slot and... that's it. As long as there is room for the adapter to plug in, it would probably work I would think.
