Is there a way for me to play "Fantastic Parodius," "Parodius Da," or "Jikkyō Oshaberi Parodius" on my American SNES without mutilating either the cartridge or the SNES itself? Does a game genie work on these titles? If anyone has that information, I would be grateful. Thanks!
Okay, now that I know how that all works, what are some great European/Japanese-only games that are either in english or rely very little on text?

...tiny practically invisible tab cutting is 'mutilation'?
Iirc, as long as the game doesn't have those extra pins on the sides of the cart, it should work with a game genie just fine.

This isn't really answering your question exactly, but I'm pretty sure all the Parodius games are also available for Saturn.

Re: SNES Parodius Import Options
A Game Genie used as a pass through will work fine for the first two, but not for Jikkyō Oshaberi Parodius. That game uses the outer pins and a GG does not have them.

Re: SNES Parodius Import Options
Thanks everyone! Now that I know my options, which of the three is the best Parodius?

I'm rather fond of Oshaberi Parodius myself. I LOVE the cat! When he gets the shield, he hides in a paper bag and it's so cute! Plus his shots are kitty paw prints that richochet around, IIRC.
But yeah, if you have a JP or modded Saturn, you could get the Parodius Deluxe Pack, but those are ports of the arcade and not the SFC versions.
Really, don't hesitate to bust out those tabs from your SNES with a pair of pliers. It's not mutilating it at all. It's a very simple and harmless procedure.

If I were to do it that way, would I be able to play Oshaberi Parodius without any other issue?greg wrote:I'm rather fond of Oshaberi Parodius myself. I LOVE the cat! When he gets the shield, he hides in a paper bag and it's so cute! Plus his shots are kitty paw prints that richochet around, IIRC.

Yes, please do not feel hesitant to take a pair of pliers to the inside of your console. It's made of Nintendium, after all.
Oshaberi does have the special FX chip for the constant voiceover commentary, and I have no idea if one of those converters will work with it or not. My friend back in Arizona was skittish about me taking pliers to his console too, but I assured him it would be fine. With only a small struggle, they will come off. Your SNES will look no more different than it did before, unless you open the flap and look inside carefully.
As big of a Super Famicom nut as I am, I have never actually owned a Super Famicom unit since my SNES is enough and can play both regions' games. However, to modify a SFC unit to play SNES games, that would be an unsightly mod, for sure.
Oh yes, and I forgot to mention that there is also a Parodius Deluxe Pack for the PSP too. However, I find that playing shmups on handhelds is difficult. I'd rather play RPGs or SRPGs on a handheld instead.
EDIT: It is worth noting that the SFC versions of the Parodius games have extras that are not featured in the arcade games, nor the other ports. For example, extra stages in Parodius Da, and additional characters in Gokujou Parodius (like Goemon and Ebisumaru from Gambare Goemon!). Oshaberi was the first Parodius game released specifically for the SFC. If you want Sexy Parodius, you'll have to find it on the PSX or SAT.

Re: SNES Parodius Import Options
Yup in actuality it's not a typical sight to find SNES cartridge adapters created for the sole purpose of US<->JPN/Korea. Same as N64 they would have true 1:1 pins with no extra connectors or features of any kind at all.
Most SNES adapters are intended for PAL users. That kind has limited use on NTSC systems because many PAL games block 60hz. Breaking lockout alone won't run titles with a video mode check.
