Model 1 Genesis graphical issues

Post by Jmastab »

Hey everyone, I bought a Sega Genesis Model 1 last week and I'm having some graphical issues with it. The first day I got it some games seemed a bit glitchy like Vectorman 1 and 2 but now they start to run with no problems. But when I play Sonic 1 (on Genesis 6-pak) or Sonic 2 whenever underwater parts shows up the game glitches up a bit. The glitching up isn't as bad on Sonic 2 but it's really bad with Sonic 1. When I enter the level Labyrinth Zone the music speeds a lot and when you enter a body of water the transition slows down a lot and graphical glitches show up and then I'm suddenly underwater. I think it has something to do with the colors changing. The game is still playable but it just worries me a bit. Has anyone experienced this before, does anyone think I should open up my Genesis and clean up some parts or fix up something specific or it's just the system getting old and there's nothing i can do. Thanks for the help :)

do you have another copy of the game? These games are common and you should find another easily.

It could just be your cart?

There is some flicker in Laybrinth zone. It happens to my game too, like you said In the transition. But not to those extremes you mentioned.

I read that there are cart revisions that can remove/modify the game to remove glitches or errors. They are later releases. Maybe you have an early version of a game and your genesis may not be fully compatible.

Your genesis may need a cleaning just to be on the safe side. There are lots of gennys out there to replace this one if its too much trouble.

I'd clean both the system and the games.

This sounds similar to issues with overclocking when the clock speed wires aren't clean, or when a cheap knock off processor is overclocked. There's a pin in the cart slot that handles clock speed. If that pin or the carts are dirty, I'd speculate that could cause this issue, and/or it's a really early model1 with the knock-off motorola 68k processor. Either way, a good cleaning of the carts and making sure the cart slot looks good ought to take care of it. If not, like flojocabron said, there are plenty of systems to replace yours.

Hey everyone thanks for the responses, I think I'll attempt cleaning it tomorrow. When I was playing around with the game today I put in the level select code for Sonic 1 and it the level was working fine :D , but the game does screw up on that level after playing it for so long (about an hour) :( so I'm starting to think it's the console and not the game. I hope cleaning the system fixes the problem. I don't really want to return the system because I got it for a great deal.

If it screws up after being on a while, have you opened it up to check if there's a blanket of dust on everything? Are the vents blocked? Or maybe there's some component that's iffy and gets unhappy when warm?

Hey everyone, I cleaned the system and sadly I'm still having this problem, I also cleaned up areas recommended on the motherboard and some of my games and they all look great. Now after I played up to Sonic 1's labyrinth zone and I was having the glitches, I started to play some Sonic 2 and see how the water levels were acting in those games and both Chemical plant and Aquatic ruin were acting up a lot worse. After that I tried some of my other games (Vectorman, Coolspot,) and they wouldn't even load past the Sega info screen. I even tried putting the 6 pack back in and that wouldn't even work. So I'm starting to think that this Genesis is doomed and I should probably return it  . If anyone has any other recommendations I'd appreciate it but anyways thanks everyone for trying to help me out.

A question one of us should have asked before you went on and cleaned the genny and/or carts is what did you use to clean it with? You have to be careful, you may use the wrong product and screw up the genny, and I doubt the entity who sold it to you will accept you returning it after you messed with the system. It would be nice info as well as knowing what adapter you're using to tell us your cleaning solution.

The power supply I used was just the regular power supply that came with the system (official sega brand), and I had my dad help me clean the system which he's been opening tv's and game systems forever. We used Deoxit Contact cleaner to clean the parts that were recommend to clean from a couple of videos on Youtube. I think the system was just old and was starting to malfunction. I got a model 2 on Tuesday and the games i was having problems with are working amazing :D . I just returned the system today told the guy it overheats and he gave me store credit, bought like 10 genesis games. But thanks again everyone for trying to help I really appreciate it. :)
