I just wanted to get a thread going, listing the old school styled FPS games out there. Some general guidelines would be an open level design, more than likely with secrets. In most cases, one can hold an unlimited amount of guns, although not in every case.
I'd like to mention any large differences in any ports. Not if there is one or two different levels, but in cases like Quake II PC compared to Quake II 64, etc.
1. Doom
2. Doom 2
3. Wolfenstein 3D
4. Quake
5. Quake II
6. Quake II 64
7. Dark Forces
8. Hexen
9. Heretic
10. Hexen 2
11. Heretic 2
12. Duke Nukem 3D
13. Blood
14. Rise of the Triad
15. Blake Stone
16. Shadow Warrior
17. Serious Sam
18. Doom 64
19. Exhumed/Powerslave
20. Unreal
21. Redneck Rampage
22. Marathon
23. Marathon 2: Durandal
24. Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
25. Killing Time
26. Escape from Monster Manor
27. PO'ed
28. Alien vs Predator
Any additions would be appreciated.

Hexen's definitely a shooter; most of your weapons are ranged, it's just fantasy themed.
You've got the Serious Sam series which includes secrets but the level design isn't as open as Doom's.

I liked Doom 3, but it is definitely not like an old school FPS. You're sneaking around and fighting 1-3 things at a time, not in large rooms with a horde of stuff after you going ohcrapohcrapohcrapohcrapohcrapohcrap.

It is old school, but it's not PC old school. It's more like console old school, ala Medal of Honor.

I think Unreal kind of bends the line. Could fit, or maybe not. But I'd say it's arguably a bit more simplistic and old school in design than say, Half-Life which was out around the same time, or System Shock 2, Thief, etc.

QFT. Marathon Durandal is one of the best classic FPS games (only surpassed by my love of Doom) ever made. Yet because it was made only for Mac OS, it didn't get a lot of attention. There was an XBLA re-release, and you can get the game for free on PC/Mac/Linux in the form of AlephOne.
