dreamcast s video or composite

Post by mas »

Hi everyone,
I want to pick up a vga adapter for the dreamcast but it's average price is about 30-40.00 thru ebay. Right now I have composite which sucks but i see alot of svideo cables for the dreamcast really cheap under 5.00 in matter of fact. I just wanted to know how much of a differance is there between s video and composite for the dreamcast. If I can find a vga cheap great but right now I 'm thinking of just s video because its really cheap.

VGA> SVideo> Composite

There is definitely an improvement going from Composite to SVideo, aninexpensive upgrade. VGA is where the pic really shines, gets bumped up to 640x480 480p. If you decide to go VGA, get the box not the cable. This allows the option of utilizing SVideo for the few games that do not work in VGA.

Just be a little patient and just hold off for a VGA cable. Just keep an open eye. Many people I know (including myself) have been able to nab a VGA accessory for around the $15-$20.

S-video is very finicky and those cords on eBay are mostly junk. I've had very limited success with any S-video cord for the DC - having constantly to mess with the back of it like i'm adjusting bunny ears on an old TV to get the picture in.

When it works, it is a CLEAR upgrade - they are just really crappy.

Check out the reviews on Amazon for more detail.

Idk, I bought a cheap s-video cable off of ebay a while back before I got rid of my Dreamcast and it looked pretty good to me, though at the time the only thing I had to compare it to was RF so obviously the difference was night and day. I guess if you're going to get a cheap one you just run the risk of it possibly being crap. But if you're not as picky about video quality as a lot of people here are, I'm sure it'd get the job done.

I once picked up a set of Monster SVideo cables on the cheap at the Swap Meet and accidently busted one of the pins. The point is unless the cable is reeeeally of poor grade any brand will be fine. The shielding is not as critical as an RF lead. JUST BE CAREFUL OF THE PINS when inserting, a pain when fishing in the back of a HDTV.

@CRT I know iknow! Its just I personally find the VGA cable more suitable for me personally. Additionally the cable is sometimes slightly cheaper than the box. Also, 5 or 6 titles in the US library that isn't VGA compatible isn't much of a game changer to me. I can just enjoy those game games on a CRT TV standalone AV/Svid cables.

The box vs cable is usually around five bucks difference, not much when investing over thirty dollars already. However if a Dreamcast VGA cable is found cheap then worth grabbing. The main advantage of the box is avoiding swapping cables.

The ideal situation is if the HDTV supports 640x480 VGA AND SVideo or Secondary Composite. Both connections can be utilized and selected with the bypass switch on the box and hitting the remote input.

Its quite rare to find an HDTV that has svid these days (mine certainly doesn't). And even if it did, I wouldn't dare to play a game on any HDTV via composite or Svid. Perfer to play those games on a CRT all day errday!
