I think I've Become an Old Man.

Post by Mendoza »

Maybe its the fact that i seem to be stuck doing adjunct work for insulting pay and I can't seem to get on at any place full time?

Maybe its because my birthday is coming up and I'm dreading it?

Maybe its because I'm around teenagers all the time at work and can barely relate to them?

Or maybe its because ive found myself staying up late two separate nights this week listening to old songs on the radio and on youtube thinking about my by gone days. When the biggest concern i had was what genesis game to rent or what girl to get up the courage to ask out.

Somewhere along the line I think i became an old man.

Do any of you find yourself doing this? I'm not ashamed to admit i got a bit sad both times. My first thought was, "man where the hell did all those years so?" Then i started to think about all my mistakes and what i had to show for my life.

So cliche. If id have had a beer and been sitting on my porch the cliche would have been complete.

All the same the feeling was genuine.

Damn, nostalgia can be a bitch.

:D From my own experience, I still feel 15 at heart but I do know the body is getting older.
I'm guessing you may have crossed into your 30s from how you described how you're feeling. I hope you're not in your 20s cuz you might be older than your age then.

Are your balls hanging at mid-thigh level?

Do your balls hang low? Do they swing to and fro?
Can you tie 'em in a knot? Can you tie 'em in a bow?
Can you throw 'em o'er your shoulder like a Continental soldier?
Do they make a lusty clamor when you hit them with a hammer?
Can you bounce 'em off the wall like an Indian rubber ball?
Do they have a hollow sound when you drag 'em on the ground?
Do they have a mellow tingle when you hit 'em with a shingle?
Do they chime like a gong when you pull upon your dong?
Can you do the double shuffle when your balls hang low?
Do your balls hang low?

I was born in the 1990s and ever since I was 13-14 I have avoided people of my own age. It's normal, some people become mentally more mature faster than others. Not being to able to relate to the "average teenager" on a mental level is a healthy thing, especially if you are 22 or older :) I've never had much commmon with people of my age. Age is irrelevant, as long as you have some kind of "mental bond" or common intrests with some one.

I'm nostalgic all the time :)

This kinda reminds me of Iron Maiden's song "Wasted Years"
You never miss if til' it's gone away
And my heart is lying there and will be til' my dying day

So understand don't waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years

Too much time on my hands, I got you on my mind
Can't ease this pain , so easily, when you can't find the words to say
It's hard to make it through another day
And it makes me wanna cry and throw my hands up to the sky

So understand don't waste your time
Always searching for those wasted years
Face up, make your stand
And realize you're living in the golden years
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

For a second there I thought you were answering yourself.

But to try and add something more constructive that a song about balls, I have to agreed that teenagers are hard to relate to, and that's mainly down to them being in an awkward period of life.

I sometimes ponder wistfully over years gone by, but I never get worried about wasting my life and dying. I enjoy what I've done and don't see any of it as wasted time, even the mistakes and all those hours I've spent grinding at RPGs.

How often do you get like this?

Do it!!!

The other night I was sitting out on my front porch, drinking, wearing overalls and a straw hat, with a hound dog at my feet.

But yeah, nostalgia is a weird thing. I had a bad childhood so most of my nostalgic memories are bundled with something negative unfortunately... but I do miss some of the simpler times: playing sports, not having to worry about work/college/responsibilities, chillax0ring during the summer months, chasing after girls I had no chance with, playing video games without DRM or DLC, etc...

You guys whine too much.

Life only continues to get more difficult, provide more challenges, and makes you contemplate the decisions you've made that has led to the life you lead. The truth is everyone can usually look back five years and say "it was so much easier then". Everyday can be the best day of your life if you make it... Unless your dog dies, then that day is going to be fucking awful.

I hear a lot of "I can't connect with people my age" on this board, despite the fact they're actually connecting with people their own age. I'm not singling any one out, but enough with this. This is always said by the same kids who won't even try to talk to any of their peers, and are just as guilty of prejudging people the same way jocks may prejudge emo kids (do emo kids still exist?). The "I'm more mature/smart" argument is bullshit. If you were smart enough you'd be in a gifted school with kids with the same intelligence.

Never forget how good you have it. Never forget that perception is reality, and you create your own perception. That, and if you can't live happily by yourself, you'll never be happy unless you make an effort to change.

And if you get one dimensional on missing the past, or can't stop thinking about being depressed, ask yourself this: "What did God do before he created his own existence?". That shit will confuse you for hours upon end.
