Games Just Like OB:MotBQ and OG64
Games Just Like OB:MotBQ and OG64
Are there other SRPGs that are closer to Ogre Battle 64 than Tactics Ogre? Specifically, I'm looking for RPGs (i.e. where I can upgrade the characters' stats and weapons/armor) where I control an army (not a few band of men like Shining Force)? Fantasy setting strongly preferred.

Soul Nomad and the World Eaters is fairly close. Instead of real time army movement it's turn based and grid based, but the actual fights between armies is just like Ogre Battle, complete with no control and differing attacks based on location in the grid. You also can attack from range. It's a Nippon Ichi game and has a similar sense of humor as their other works like Disgaea, along with some optional power-gaming aspects. It's not nearly as insane as Disgaea's stuff, though.

Did you end up liking it?sabrage wrote:Check out The Last Remnant.
To sum up the Last Remnant, it's like if you had several parties of characters (think FF) and you controlled the parties one by one as groups. I really enjoyed the battle system myself.
For WRPG's, I wonder if the Heroes of Might & Magic games are like this? Think I want to check some of those out myself someday.

I still haven't gotten around to buying The Last Remnant, but I've read enough on it to know how it works.
HOMM and King's Bounty: The Legend might be worth a look. Going around and recruiting new soldiers and managing them is a huge part of the game, as you can lose too many units in one battle and make the game unplayable past that point.

Warcraft 3 is a RTS but you might like it. The RPG/stat element is fairly light in WC3, but you control a hero (very diverse selection of them) who can hold up to 6 items and there are a lot of different kinds of units and buildings with different attacks, spells, strategies etc so if Starcraft-type of mass scale unit controlling is what you are looking for, it's a great game for that.
There are all kinds of online mods like Hero Line Wars and DOTA with modified rule sets, maps and items (which can improve the whole stat/RPG-element in gameplay). If you are playing the regular game, you can and you must upgrade your different units with new armor, weaponry and spells. Resource management plays a heavy role. If you dont want a full-fledged strategy game, Warcraft 3 is great because, well, it's Warcraft
Great storyline and a very immersive fantasy theme.
Here's what the regular 1v1 looks like
Strategy games like Hearts of Iron II are also great and you can build much larger armies too. But those games are usually WW2/modern warfare. There are different historic perioids in HOI2 though, you cant set the game in medieval times and limit the maximum level of technological advancement.

Soul Nomad for the PS2. It's extremely similar to Ogre Battle, from your unit attacks being based on their location in the formation (front, center, back), and that combat itself being auto like in Ogre Battle. It is an NISA game though, so it's one of those stat-heavy games like Disgaea. I love it.
Huge RPG fan.
