Alternative (Extreme) Sports Games
I'm not sure how to best label this genre of sports games. GameFAQs will lump non-traditional sports like skateboarding as "alternative" (under sports).
I was thinking about the Tony Hawk series and it got me wondering about the other titles that Activision released with similar branding.
To be honest, Kelly Slater Pro Surfer rings so close to Tony Hawk Pro Skater that I instantly imagine the games being the same type of setup, only with surfing (and I hypothesize this is awesome).
Are these games considered solid adaptions of the sport? Are there any you would recommend?
Pic included of the particular labelling i'm talking about.

Re: Alternative (Extreme) Sports Games
The first Dave Mirra BMX game was really awesome, it allowed you to use modifiers on base tricks, so that if you were doing a backflip as your trick, you could use the one foot modifier and do a one footed backflip and it just goes off from there.
I found almost every other extreme sports game I have played (scooters, surfing, etc) feel like cash cows, trying to cash in on the success of Tony Hawk, but not doing a good job.
The BMX version by activision (Matt Hoffman) feels like a BMX just put in place of a skater, but it does not run as smooth or as fluid as the early Tony Hawk games, if you want to see all games that they made look up "Activsion 02" I think they made a wake boarding game and possibly something else.

What about "T&C Surf Designs (NES)"?
I don't think this fits the cash cow category, nor is it accurate, but it is fun.

That's a great example, and one of those "alternative" or other titles that falls in the sports genre for the NES.
Here's my list:
720 Degrees
Championship Bowling
Crash 'n the Boys: Street Challenge
Cyberball
Heavy Shreddin'
Klashball
Rollerblade Racer
Skate or Die
Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble
Ski or Die
Slalom
T&C Surf Designs: Wood & Water Rage

I remember the Splashdown games on PS2 being really great. They were done (well the first one at least iirc) by the guys that did the ATV Offroad Fury games (also great).
Older. Not wiser.

Re: Alternative (Extreme) Sports Games
So the other Activision games are:
Shaun Palmer's Pro Snowboader
Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX
Are these generally comparable to the game options and learning curve in the Tony Hawk games?

Do sport parody games like Rock the Rink, Mutant League Series, and the rest count?
WWE Series? Probably not. I often wonder what would be the overall reaction if Sportscenter showed a WWE highlight on top ten.
I couldn't find a "General Sports" thread but did want to post about Vick's latest interview. When asked about Andy R. being fired if they didn't advance in the playoffs this year his response was "Not under my watch". The guy still hasn't learned a thing about being humble. It's not Vick's team to manage.
That and we all if it came down to keeping Reid or Vick and Vick had any say he'd watch his own rear.

Don't forget California Games for the NES. You gotta love those frisbee faceplants.

Yup, I had these marked under "Other" rather than "Alternative" so I need to clean that out.
American Gladiators Other
California Games Other
Magic Darts Other
Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular Other
Super Dodge Ball Other
World Games Other
