hacking roms for infinite lives

Post by RCBH928 »

There are a lot of games, specifically platformers, like EarthWorm Jim which I would like to experience but o not want to go through hours of retrying to beat the game , I want to just blaze through them to see them, I dont have enough years in my life to fully play through a lot of those that interest me.

Any one know how can I hack a rom to do so? If it works on homebrewes Wii even better.

It would be easier to just enter Game Genie codes instead. Most emulators support the use of an internal Game Genie.

For most console roms it is possible to hard-code/hack Game Genie / Gameshark / Pro Action Replay codes into the rom using a hex editor or a dedicated patching program.

Disclaimer - I haven't actually used any of the stuff in the links; The few times I did it I was using a hex editor, an old guide from The Whirlpool and the debugging consoles of NES and Gameboy emulators. I think that first link should work for you tho. It can even make IPS patches for distribution :D

Ok I tried Genesis on my moded Wii, Earth Worm Jim.
I used 4 to 5 game genie codes and after 3.5 hours I couldnt beat the game, I got stuck on the final level.

Now I remember why I stopped playing games back in the 90s, its because of games like these. How are you supposed to beat it , when it was designed to stop you from completing it even with cheats?

Why did the developers design games this way? The last level of EWJ was full of spikes, you move you die. Now imagine you have only 3 lives and limited continues. That is if you made it to tha level inthe first place.

When I was a kid I couldn't beat EWJ but I played the crap out of it on Genesis... I used the debug code for something and pretty sure I had to fill my health up with a cheat often. Tho! - When I got it for my virtual console a couple years ago I was able to beat it without codes! (on easy... and not in one sitting) That game is effing hard. But yea, try using those cheats if you have to :)

Earthworm Jim had a steep difficulty curve but it was nowhere near as bad as Contra/Probotector or Battletoads  The sequel is definitely easier.

Use save states. They're better than infinite lives and all emulators support them.

I just have to say, I think it's really interesting that you're stuck on the final level of EWJ. That game caused some frustration in my youth, but for me it was mostly the underwater-pod level. That one drove me crazy - you had to go fast enough to finish before running out of air, but if you hit into the walls enough, the thing shatters and you die. You pretty much have to memorize the layout of the level to do it.

I'm sure I died a number of times on the final level, but I don't remember it being THAT bad. Maybe you're missing some things you're supposed to be swinging from?
