Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Post by casterofdreams »

So I know it was released a couple of months back but I am getting around to having it up and running. I got it on a laptop (hp Pavilion dv7 1245-dx) and its very smooth.

So if some of you are not up to date with this I'll tell you up front that it's going to be confusing. The Start Menu has a complete overhaul. its not that menu off to the side of the screen. Instead when you press the windows key a whole menu comes up that has every thing laid out in a tile like system. That's the biggest change.

It's hard to explain all the different changes regarding the "Metro" UI so I recommend you partition up some space and try it out.

Insert Windows 8 vs AOL 1995 pic.
Still using XP (32 & 64) succesfully and a couple computers have 98 Lite and KernelEX.
Linux may be the best bet soon.

You have 2 years left until MS no longer supports it. I myself just got W7pro student upgrade (that works as a full install) for $65. I'd been running with XP for 11 years and now all but 1~2 PCs at work run W7 so I figured why not.

Though I was gonna check out the W8 consumer preview but then I thought, this is the odd version out. If ME, and Vista are any indications, I can pass on this one too.

I love the passion people have towards Windows XP. It truly is a great OS.

After playing around with Windows 8 I ultimately will not get this OS, or anything after that. This is the direction that Microsoft is headed I feel so Windows 7 is really the best thing there is. The Start menu is nice and all but its too much of a bother for me. I like my Windows task bar and Start menu at the corner left side with all of my programs in a list format like its been since Windows 95 so I'll stick with that thank you very much. It's not very intuitive I feel, unlike the jump from list menus to the Ribbon UI in Office.

Windows 7 is the definitive OS. After that is XP :P

Thanks for the heads up I will throw it on my HTPC tonight. Ive been waiting for this one for awhile - the Developers Preview ran poorly on my test boxes.

AS for the XP vs 7 vs whatever. XP is great for 32bit, I take that back, it is the best 32 bit os. But if you are going 64 bit OS, 7 is awesome. XP just cant handle more than 4 gigs of ram.

Won't be touching it.

Hell, I'll probably be back on Linux once Steam gets released (if it ever does).

Metro UI is great for touchscreens. I love my Windows Phone, and I could totally see it being awesome on a tablet. On a desktop however, it's probably terrible.

Yeah I like it on my Windows Phone. Curious how this would be on an All-in-one PC with a touch screen LCD?

I thought it'd be horrible with mouse control. It actually works surprisingly well. Mousewheel scrolls left and right quickly. But I've found I'm actually most productive with it going straight keyboard. Win brings up the start screen and the default search is just for apps, so I can go something like "Win, n, o" and it's on Notepad, ready for me to hit enter to launch.

I think thats the biggest issue. The UI is optimal for touch but not for M and K. The desktop is treated as an app and doesnt support a full blown taskbar either. The start menu is pretty smooth so I'll give it that. And I'm a huge fan of the Xbox integration with Live. I did a full install of microsoft office 2007 just to try it out and all components were spread out having their own tile. I found that pretty anoyying considering I wish they were group together to conserve some space.
