Light Guns: Which and Why?

Post by jaundice »

I'd like to venture into the world of Light Gun games, considering there are many good games that use light guns, and I'm really looking to play games like House of the Dead, Lethal Enforcers, Virtua Cop, Yoshi's Safari, Falcon's Revenge, Time Crisis, etc. But are there any specific light guns you guys know of that are better/more available than others? I'd like to find one that is as cross compatible with various consoles as possible.

Be sure the TV is a regular CRT, even HD CRTs will not work with vintage lightguns. That said, usually 1st party ones work pretty well, however if a Dreamcast, you are stuck with 3rd party due to lockouts of some US games with the Sega Lightgun. An interesting side note is that all the Dreamcast lightguns have a unique capability to also work on a VGA CRT. As far as cross compatibility, not sure since each console have their own dedicated lightguns.

If your TV is a EDTV CRT at 480p, the PS2 Guncon 2 has a special compatible mode.

If you do have a HD, the newer consoles have "Lightgun" games, for example the Wii Remote and House of the Dead.

Take a look at my CRT vs LCD signature link, might help in your quest.

Most of those games require system specific guns. Lethal Enforcers uses the Justifier, Yoshi's Safari the SuperScope, etc. The only cross platform guns I recall are some Saturn/PS1 Hybrids (I have a "Panther" gun that does this) which work just as well with Virtua Cop or Time Crisis, Area 51, HOTD, etc. Maybe start there.

Oddly the Wii turned into a great light gun shooting system. Do you have one of those? There are lots of guns to choose from there---I like the Nyko Perfect Shot, personally.

You'll usually be buying a gun for the system you want. In that case, this list of light gun games by system is useful. CRT Gamer also makes a good point about making sure you have a compatible television for the type of gun you buy.

I like the Guncon2 personally, but I'm a PS2 fan and I like the Time Crisis series, plus I think Resident Evil: Dead Aim is a cool concept.

For light gun gaming across consoles, you might want to try something like the EMS Top Gun 3. I've never used it personally, but it uses the USB drives on various consoles and PC to allow you to use the same light gun across platforms.

@ J T - Thanks.

@ jaundice - I don't think I was clear in pointing out my CRT vs LCD Guide in my signature link. A good portion of it deals with Lightguns with reviews. I focused on compatibility issues on various types of TVs as well as different ways to hookup; the Guncon adapter for example.

First of all his posts are not posts they are incredibly extensive Guides that took alot of time and effort to built up. Second of all his guides handle all of the posters questions. Third of all, why all of the hate against the BIGGEST by far contributor on Racketboy Forums. What gives? He is never spamming. I should make a thread asking about why so many people seem to hate CRT. I owe him alot. He got me into freemcboot, ps2 HDD and now into light gun gaming and his guides have been interesting reads.

I don't get it either. So not everyone is a fan of his posting style, but I find him incredibly polite and informative. He also did answer OP's question, too, by recommending first party ones in general with the exception of the Dreamcast.

:?:

Edit: Also, is it really necessary to constantly mention dissatisfaction with CRTGAMER's posting style? So long as he isn't breaking any rules, why not just block him if he's that annoying/upsetting?

@ J T, d123456 and o.pwuaioc. Thanks.

@ dsheinem - I don't get why you consider my links as Spam and not helping, it goes into detail into answering a given post. In this Thread a question was asked about Lightguns so I directed my Guide concerning Lightguns which also has Video Review links of Lightguns from another member. In another Thread there is a question about running Import games in the PS2, you went out of your way to search my Threads and post links of my Replies to similar questions. All that hate and work and not even helping the OP to answer the question.

The paraody you posted and continually link is wrong. It wasn't proper back then and is not proper now to belittle a fellow member.

I gotta say I agree about CRT's posts having some weird formatting. They have a ton of info, but it often feels very cluttered and disorganized, so it's difficult to sift through to find what you're actually looking for. They almost read like stream-of-consciousness type stuff or a bot post.

I mean his CRT vs LCD HD post goes from Light guns to VGA, scalers, s-video cable mods for the C64, stuff about PSX link cables, anamorphic widescreen, n64 end labels, a boot drive bay, batteries, testing capacitors, and on and on and on. It's kinda hard to really follow anything going on in there.
