There are more 2D than 3D platformers these days...

Post by J T »

I just thought that was interesting. For awhile, the 2D platformers died out in favor of 3D ones, but with the growing indie and retro-revival scenes, it seems like 2D platformers are back in the spotlight. Reversal! I'm having a hard time even thinking of 3D platformers that came out in the last 5 years. There was Sonic Generations, Alice: Madness Returns, and um... hm.

You know, I think you're right. I never really thought about it.

As much as I love 2D platformers, I miss the spotlight 3D platformers used to hold. The only other genre that can so easily get my time and attention are FPS games. Which explains my love for the N64.

Hasn't been a decent non-linear collect-a-thon in years.

And to me, that is a bad thing. :(

Indeed... I would love to see a new Banjo-Kazooie game or any other open world game of that nature with the amount of care and creativity Rare put into those games. Open world 3D platformers are my favorite genre of games by far thanks to those Rare classics (including Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo-Tooie).

Good. I find 3D platformers disorienting and annoying.

They got replaced by the acrobatic open-world games, as dogman touched upon. I've always considered Assassin's Creed to be a platformer on autopilot, anyways.

I grew up playing the classic 2-d platformers, so I am glad they are making a comeback there were quite a few years that they were almost non-existent. I do enjoy several 3d platformers but, to me, they don't really feel like platformers. it is kind of hard to articulate that point. I think it is because it seems like most of them make the levels huge just for the sake of being huge. you run around in all this open space just to get to platforming sections or collect coins et al. It'd be kind of like running to the right for 20 minutes in world 1-1 of mario before you got to the flag just to make the level seem big. so most of the 3d platformers I like are the odd quirky ones like the banjo games.

Mario 64 was one of the few games to door an exploration based 3D platformer properly. Rare's takes were barely platformers. They were barely games. You just collected shiny shit over and over, and 100 pieces of shiny shit would give you 1 big piece of shiny shit, and then you'd take 10 of those to open a new world so you can wander around finding tiny shiny shits all over again.
