DS Homebrew Backup Solutions

Post by racketboy »

I figured instead of continuing a discussion in a BST thread, I should start a proper discussion here.

While the CycloDS Evolution does look a nice solution (in-game screen brightness adjustment!), it I haven't seen anybody with it in stock.

So it looks like the R4 is the most practical solution right now.

Here's some questions I have to those that have dealt with it...
- Does the R4 have a way of reading ebooks? (maybe sideways/brainage style?)
- Can it play GBA stuff without a GBA slot add-on?
- What RAM/Rumble pack thing works with the R4? or do I have to get a different solution bundle?
- Are all GBA on DS backup devices limited to the same functionality as playing a normal GBA cart? (I wish it would pause and go to sleep if I shut the DS like it does with DS games)

Also, how big are most DS games?

Yeah these things are getting tough to find. So many old mod chip sites I used to frequent now seem to carry nothing but regular accessories and replacement parts. Kinda sad.

Well this place seems decent and has good review on ResellerRatings:

Those are a bit more expensive and it isn't Amazon.com actually selling them...

Questions about the EZ Flash GBA carts....
Can I use it with the R4?
How do you transfer GBA ROMs to it with the PC?

realhotstuff is cool. They're legit and fast.

The EZ-5 3-in-1 expansion can be used with the R4 but I recall hearing that some of the bigger games didn't work unless you have an EZ5(which I don't really recommend). They are about to release the M3Real which is apparently going to be the end-all-be-all of flash carts and it also going to have a GBA adaptor of its own, so you might want to wait and see how that pans out. Either way you don't copy GBA games from your PC. You copy them to the same SD card you have in the slot-1 cartridge and use that to copy games to the slot-2 cart and manage save files.

OK -- that helps. How long before that M3Real?
And when you say "bigger games", do you mean the larger GBA titles? Do you know what the cutoff size is?
Also, what's the most afforable and practical solution for playing GBA ROMs on my Cube's GBA Player?

CycloDS probably will be out of stock the day they become available again cause a lot of people are waiting for it. Looks like I'll have to wait also for this M3Real, and hope the price is similar to an R4 which is more attractive.
