Launch PS3 collector's questions

Post by pvt_awol »

Hey guys, I was wondering what some of the "collectors" in the house think of this.

Now, I'm not in this game to sell stuff. I'm not in it to make money, or anything like that. I think it is awesome though if I have something that is valuable (just the knowledge of it anyway) and it makes my gaming friends jealous. LOL. I can only imagine if I had had the foresight when I was 12 years old to buy a few copies of Earthbound, and just keep them in a closet somewhere.

So, my question. Now that I'm an adult, and can afford to do dumb stuff like buy multiple versions of things, what do you think will happen to the value of the launch 60gb PS3's? I have a launch 60 that has never had an issue. No YLOD or anything. (I guess I don't play it often enough?) The thing is perfect, and I have the original box and receipt.

The thing is, I'm a huge BD movie fan and I like using my PS3 as a media center because it recognizes more codec formats than the 360. I just stopped using it when all of the YLOD scares started a few years ago.

Do you think it's worth it for me to box it up and store it away and buy a new one to use? Again, I don't really ever intend on selling it, but 10 years down the road it might be cool to have a fully working launch 60gb in a box. Do you guys (and gals) think I'm an idiot? Maybe the current gen consoles won't be as "collectible" as the SNES era stuff? I would just keep using it, but Sony told me that they won't allow me to extend my warranty (they offer a warranty extension through PS+, but sadly not to launch 60gb owners) and I've also been informed by Sony that if I send it in for the $150 repair if it breaks, that they won't send me back the same unit, they'd swap it for a slim model.

So I'm out of options. What do you guys think? Sorry for the book, I just wanted to get a good discussion going.

If you can afford it, I don't see why you can't buy a Slim.

I personally use my 60gb quite a bit and will continue to use it. I figure as long as it's taken care of there's not much risk.

I wouldn't be surprised if it at least continued to be worth a lot more used than the other models. If YLOD takes enough out (or if enough people believe that YLOD took a lot of them out), I could see the price staying right where it is for a while, if not going up a bit.

They already sell for more than a new unit. I see nice collectors units going for about 250-300 on eBay.

It will certainly be more valuable then a regular non PS2 compatible PS3. From a practicality standpoint the slim PS3s do have a better reliability factor and a regular fat PS2s are better choice for the hard drive install capability. Once the PS4 comes out I suspect ALL PS3s will drop in value.

All good points guys. Maybe I should just use it as normal and not worry too much about it? I would just hate for it to die on me. Then it's a paper weight, because Sony won't fix it.

Maybe I should look into a cheap Samsung BD player? That could be my media center and BD unit, and I could just use the PS3 for gaming only.

I only think they'll be sought after while PS3 is a sought after console, in general. The entirely draw is that it plays PS2 games ... but it's already getting pretty cheap if you want to go out buy a PS2 and PS3 ... So, I don't think it'll be some sort of crazy collector's item. Not yet anyway.

I would look at games that are already getting hard to find and maybe focus on that. Then again, you can never really predict which games are going to be sought after and which aren't. Rarity seems to have very little to do with it.

Agree, save the milage for just PS3 games. It would be ironic if the YLOD appeared while running a PS2 game or watching a movie on it.

Sony will do the repair if the seal is not tampered. An even trade program at a cost, you get the exact same model. I went thru this four times detailed in my YLOD signature link. I finally gave up and went the PS3 Slim route.

It'll be a collectors item to those that want to buy a console and have it fail on them. Not sure what the lure is.

Get a warranty if you buy a stand alone Blu-Ray player. I've heard they are prone to failure. Reviews are mixed so might be worth paying a little extra to save your self the trouble.

I'd say just get a slim, PS3s are the most reliable blu-ray players around. If my brother hadn't just got a HDtv I'd sell you my slim.
