I found a SNES Test Cartridge

Post by arnold_the_bartender »

I would appreciate the Nintendo experts to weigh in on this. What is the value of these? Where were these used? What revision (I'm pretty sure others exist) could this one possibly be? The smaller chip to the left and the PCB itself are dated 1990, a year before the SNES was released here in the US. Interesting piece of history as it show a bunch of unused mini Mario (before collecting a mushroom) sprites from the SMW prototype on the second test. I picked this cart up at a local retro game shop.

I uploaded a video of it in action (as well as a reflection of me :? ).
What a maneuver!

Cassette?
Since this signature affects old posts, I'm leaving a message here in case anyone searches for my username. This account died in early 2013. I am no longer a fundamentalist.

Don't add to my problems by pretending my past views are still held in the present. I do not have any patience for that. Feel free to ask me what I think now.

Calling it a cart probably wasn't fancy enough for them.

Awesome, never seen a test cart for SNES. Where'd you find it?

Local game store.

I tried finding some info but there isn't much floating around on the net. I found this link though which pretty much gives me info I already figured out when playing around with the cart. http://www.fossilweb.com/Nintendo/snestest.htm The one on the left is the one I have, which is an earlier version (perhaps the second or third judging by "Ver. 1.02") of around four discovered test carts according to the page ziggy linked to.
What a maneuver!

very cool find. I would love to have test carts for most systems. It would make it much easier to test them out.

Think you'll end up keeping it? I'd buy it but I'm pretty sure my number wouldn't be quite what you'd be looking for. :?

If this was me a few years ago, I would have no plans on giving it up but I've been wanting a new rig for years now and I mean years. I consolidated some of my collection and I've been saving up. I have the case and mobo (Rampage IV Extreme) so far but that's about it. The price of the processor I want is pretty pricey too (but worth it). I can't seem to find more info on the test cart so I'm probably going to let it go at the right time. I don't know the value of it though so I'm not ready to give it up. I don't want to be lowballed and want to get a rough estimate of what it's worth so I don't overprice it, unless nobody minds.
