Favorite Game Genie Codes

Post by TrevorF »

As a kid, I NES'ed as often as my parents would allow. After a while it became such a boring, tedious chore to trudge through games as they quickly lost replay value. Sure I played them when I had friends over but it was only to show off my mad skills. After that, back into the closet they went, only to be forgotten. But suddenly out of the light one early 90's Christmas morning I opened my first Game Genie, I was hysterical. I knew this was going to open up a whole new side of gaming and out of the close those dusty old cartridges came.

I always had fun with the high jump codes for some reason. Maybe it was fact that my parents wouldn't buy me moonshoes.

What are your favorite codes?
Thing's that I'm looking for at the moment: Super Mario RPG manual(SNES), Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals map and cart(SNES), The King of Dragons Box and manual(SNES), Lufia and the fortress of doom CIB(SNES), Earthbound CIB(SNES), EVO: The Search for Eden CIB(SNES), Harvest Moon CIB(SNES), Mario Paint CIB(SNES), Bomberman Party Pak With Super Multitap(SNES), DoReMi Fantasies CIB(SFC).

The infinite hammer bros. costume in super mario brothers 3. Always fun plus everytime you saved a king instead of the normal message he would say something about your "nice duds"

I've been impressed with the variety of effects Game Genie codes can have. One of my favorite ones is in the original Final Fantasy, you can enter two or three codes and make Bahamut's lair appear right outside of Corneria and class change immediately. I think I've gotten the most enjoyment out of my Game Genies in RPGs overall. I also remember FFVI had some great ones that could get Kefka (sort of) and Leo in your party, and there was another one that could make your characters equip random items as weapons which caused all kinds of crazy effects. Now that I think about it, there were also ones that gave Strago different enemy attacks that you couldn't use otherwise, and ones that messed up the game's events so they would play in the world of Ruin (like you could see Setzer's girlfriend flying the Falcon and other weird stuff). Game Genies can produce some really interesting stuff if you play around with them enough.

Wow! Those are pretty crazy! If you still have those written down, I would love to try some of them out. Especially the FFVI codes.

This one actually sounds like a lot of fun. I'll have to look that one up and give it a whirl. :D

Haha!! I've never actually played it.

I don't remember the original FF ones, but I'm pretty sure the really weird ones for FF6 can be found on GameFAQs. A little digging around youtube brought this up:

The video itself kind of sucks (whoever made it had no idea what they were doing), but it shows you just a bit of what the glitched effects are like. Skip to 1:00 to start seeing the effects, and 5:30 has some of the more interesting ones.

Oh yes, the Game Genie totally revitalized a few NES games for me back in the day (I got one for Cristmas too, but gave my parents my paper route money for it; money was usually pretty tight).

A friend and I used to try our own luck, just to see what random effects would happen. A favorite was Super Mario 3. One code (which I can't remember but was only 6 digits) made everything neon-psychedelic. Another code (and I really wish I knew what it was) added an additional harmony to the music... and it sounded so amazing to us, we couldn't believe it.

For real codes, we always had to use a few for Double Dragon 3 to get very far.

Always hated how it screws up the music in Mega Man 2.
...just another lost soul...

Here's some useful ones for Maximum Carnage on SNES

Infinite Health: C2A1-1F01
Infinite Lives: C2BB-1D61
Invincibility: C264-CFD0

I went through the game with some of these on ... and found that, the furthest I could ever get ... was not even a quarter of the way through the game. :| You HAVE to know where all the hidden junk is and EVERY trick and master all of it, to even attempt to advance. And unlike Contra or Mega Man ... this has less than stellar feedback and context sensitive attacks. So, usually when you get damaged, it feels unfair rather than you made a mistake.

So. Codes help :D

I really enjoyed the Game Genie codes for Toejam & Earl. There were ones that would change all enemies into Santas (amusing), Killer Bees (stressful), or Wahinis (TORTURE). You could also have all presents be a particular item, like Tomatoes.
