Super Scope 6 Troubles

Post by sgt.flanders »

So I bought myself a Super Scope 6 off of eBay the other day, and I've run into some problems. I can get the fire and start buttons to work, but whenever the game wants me to calibrate the gun, I can't hit the target at all. Once I got it to work by holding the Scope right up to the sensor, but only rarely does that work. I've tried standing far away, I've tried standing close, I've tried about a dozen different games, I've tried different CRT TV's, and I even cleaned most of the corrosion off of both battery terminals. Could my sensor be bad, or is it just my Scope?

Try these things besides the battery terminals (which probably could be the issue too)

1) Make sure the lens on the transmitter unit (the gun itself) is clean and free of scratches.

2) Also make sure the lens on the receiver (the end that plugs into the SNES) is also clean. Also make sure it is connected to the proper controller port.

I have had mine for 20 years and it still performs trouble free. Just make sure everything is as clean as can possibly be.

Well I have no idea what I was doing, but it works now. I can't believe what some rubbing alcohol and Diet Coke can do to a silicon board. Thank god these things are easy to work on.

Silicon board? Did you open up one of the components? I'd like to know possibly how you solved the problem for my knowledge anyway.

I just soaked the tiny little board that connects the battery terminals to the other board that houses the buttons and such.

Well that's one heck of a fix. I never heard of combining alcohol and coke to soak and clean a board in (except to make a drink in some cases)

Diet Coke is probably the best way to clean acid corrosion. It's kind of sick that you're supposed actually drink it.

As ludicrous as it sounds, it works beautifully. That is if the problem has to do with acid buildup on the battery terminals. Diet Coke dissolves most of the corrosion and it doesn't leave behind any sticky residue.
