Buying a PS3 so any deals floating around or advice?

Post by Xeoloux »

I'll be buying a PS3 in the next week, I've had a PS3 before a 40gb model and I loved it! (except for the expensive games) I later sold the 40gb sometime after having it for 5 months. I want to start collecting for the PS3 and I think right now is the best time to start considering almost all of the games are $20 and lower.

I was wondering if anyone knew any good deals for a ps3? I know there is the Uncharted 3 bundle but are there any other better deals then that?

I've been a PC gamer for basically all of this current gen, I have to say the the PC gaming isn't as cool as it used to be with the Xbox and PS2 were still going at it. It seemed like everyone could run all the games for PC and there were Lan parties happening all the time here in Milwaukee for Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, and the Battlefield Series!

There are a lot of exclusive and Japanese imports I want to play with the PS3 which is the main reason for the purchase.

Thanks in advance guys! :D

Go for a 60gb original ps3 if you want backwards compatability with ps2 games. If not try to snag a 120gb slim off ebay for cheap since you can always swap in a larger hdd.

If you're looking to buy new, Black Friday is always the best time to get a console. I hit 3 stores that were packed and wild and sold out when I wanted my PS3... Then I went home and ordered an awesome bundle from Amazon.

Waiting for Black Friday isn't fun. Keep an eye on Target as we tend to have a lot of sales on PS3 where you get like a free $50 dollar gift card with it. Not to bad since it could buy you a game or an extra controller.

This. Unless you really want the B/C, go for a Slim. They're only a bit quieter but I guarantee you they're more reliable than the fats. Not to mention a nice 60gb often goes for the same price as a brand new Slim.

Darn a $50 with purchase of the new star wars xbox 360 but nothing for PS3 :/
I was just looking at the specs for the PS3 models and I think I want the latest chipset because it seems to be the most stable. The 120gb Ps3 models still get YLOD from time to time apparently. I don't really mind not having backwards compatibility as the PS3 has such a large good library to collect on already.

Going to need to look at some sites for a deal.

I like Slickdeals. It's all user-run so most every good deal floats to the top, and you can set e-mail alerts for specific things you want like "Playstation 3" or "Uncharted."

If you're looking to get into one cheap, consider the 160GBs instead. Sony supports swapping the drive out with a standard 2.5" HDD. Unlike the 360, where you have to go with MS's markup on drives with a custom firmware, you can just wait for a good deal on a laptop drive.
Right now, a 320GB drive costs more than the price difference between the 160 and 320GB models...but not by all that much, and HDD costs are still spiked up. If your usage won't fill the drive up quickly, then assuming a 320GB (or larger) drive will cost $50 or less by the time you need more space (if you ever even do) seems reasonable.

That said, if you want Uncharted 3 (or inFamous 2, there's a bundle for that too), then finding one of those at MSRP isn't terrible. Subtract the cost of the game, and you're only paying a small premium for twice the HDD size.

Otherwise, it looks like Target still has the Harry Potter bundle 160GBs at the $249.99 MSRP online. It's not much, but you do get a 2D/3D Blu-ray copy of the last film, plus download vouchers for a couple more of them, which beats the whole lot of nothing you get with the regular 160GB.

Second/third/whatever that the Slim is definitely the way to go outside of backwards compatibility.
