What's your favorite Doom clone?

Post by J T »

I don't mean any FPS game; I mean the games that back in the day were derided for being clones of Doom. Basically any FPS from the 90s. It's funny how they were looked down on back then, but now people pine for the old days of FPS games with intricate levels designs and no regenerating health.

So what are your favorites? Heretic? Rise of the Triad? Blake Stone? Blood? Duke Nukem 3D? Shadow Warrior?

Oh, no contest. Blood.

The fan-made WGRealms 2 is also exceedingly excellent.

With Blake Stone being released before Doom I don't really think you can call it a clone, lol.

It's more a Wolf3D clone, especially considering it uses the Wolf3D engine

Just saying

Who here has played Strife? I only played it for a short while, but it seemed very well made to me. I also distinctly remember that it was the largest game I'd ever played at that point, 30MB.

Probably the ROTT and Blood games. Those are badass.

Oh man, I remember playing "Chex Man" as a kid.

I'd have to say my favorite "Doom Clone" would be Star Wars: Dark Forces.

EDIT: Meant to put "Chex Man" in quotes since that's what we called it when I was young.

Chex Quest was awesome. Came in a dang cereal box, haha.

I don't know if I'd call the build engine games clones. Was DN3D really hailed as a Doom clone back then?

I couldn't get into Heretic. Literally just straight up Doom with another skin, it just made me crave Doom. Hexen on the other hand looks more unique, so I have to check that one out sometime.

Hexen is cool, and it differs in that the main weapons are melee weapons with only a few ranged attacks.

I'd say that Duke Nukem 3D is the one I have the most nostalgia for out of the ones mentioned.
