Trying to find info on a game...

Post by MLew »

Ok, I use to play this game at a neighbors house in the late 80s (I think) and I've been scouring the internetz trying to find something...ANYTHING about this game with no luck.

Here's what I know:

The game is called Growth (to the best of my knowledge), I can't remember what system/computer it was on, but it was on one of those old school floppys. (the big square ones with the hole in the middle). Cant quite remember the controller, but i wanna say some type of joystick. The gameplay was setup kinda like a sidescrolling shooter, but You were in a sort of maze with grey walls with a black background (prbly an overhead view) Can't remember if you were a ship or a person, but you traveled around this kinda big area (multiscreen). We never figured out exactly what you DO in the game, but from one of the corners of the playfield, this yellowish-brownish stuff, with small pixel "holes" in it would start to grow very slowly. It would keep growing until it overtook all the area you could navigate (the black BG) There was some sort of base or station in the middle of the screens that, I think, you could take refuge.

We never could figure out what to do, I was around 8 at the time, but we had a blast navigating around as the "growth" grew until we ran outta space and eventually died. I have vivid memories of this but have no info on it. I am hoping someone here can help me!!

Been a stumper for me for a while now....

I guess I could add, the overall graphics were very intellivision/atari-ish. Blocky n whatnot.

I played this game on the C64 which sounds similar. You had to get all the people out Defender style before the Lava took over.

That's definitely not it. But a good guess nonetheless.

Edit: I don't remember anything/person/object that you had to save. It was just you in this playfield with this "stuff" growing ever so slowly.

Okay, this one is an overhead space shooter, I vaguely remember stuff appearing in one corner, thought it was a bug in the program. Synapse made good games back in the day, remember SHAMUS?

Going in the right direction. But the "walls" were thick grey areas, with paths in-between that you could travel. Until the growth took over. Im positive it was on a 5.25 floppy.

I'm good at illustrator, mayb I can mockup what I remember. Ive had NO luck whatsoever finding this.

Can't help ya man, sorry. :?

But you got me thinking... I have a few mystery games of my own. Played them back in the early 1990s on a Mac and have no recollection of what they're called anymore.

Yep, that's the boat I'm in. Only I know the name of the game! And its hard searching for the term "growth" and "floppy disk" ykno, u jus get articles on the growth of floppy disks lol

There were a few games on each floppy I remember. Haven't talked to the kid in like 15 years.

ok here is what it looked like. Very basic, kinda crude/pixel graphics. I didn't put any ship/person cuz I can't remember it. BUT, this is pretty dang close to what the rest looked like. That moldy stuff in the corner is the growth, and it eventually grew to take up the entire black space. As noted, the playfield was wider than the tv, so it scrolled left/right. The blue space is the "safe zone" if I member right

Okay, lets start real simple. Are you in the US? Did you play this on a TV or monitor? Oh and what year was it when you were 8? Important you answer if you want to narrow this down.
