A very stupid question about Ristar.... (Answered)

This is (hopefully) the stupidest question I'll ever ask, so here I go.
I just got the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 and I'm playing Ristar since I've never played this game before. I'm really enjoying it, but I'm stuck on Scortch Planet Level 2. In the very beginning in need to grab onto the thing that spins Ristar around and launch myself upwards, but I can't get high enough. On Youtube I see people doing this charge up thing while spinning, and then they launch of the thing like a shooting star. So... How the hell do I do this? I've searched the web for 20 minutes, can't find anything.
