Alternatives to Capcom fighters on the Saturn

Post by Curlypaul »

Ok, so i've played a quite a bit of Capcom fighters over the years and now I think its time to branch out a bit and I was thinking about KOF for the saturn, particularly 95 as I've seen it for a reasonable price :)

I've played some of the fighters on SNK Classics Vol 1 and I find them a bit stiff as I don't seem to be able to cancel moves together to form combos easily - is this something that sorted out in this game?

I've been thru Rackets list and it seems that my choice on non capcom games is limited to the Fatal Fury, Samuri Shodown, KOF or Waku Waku 7. Waku Waku 7 is already high on my games to buy list.

Any others that I should look out for?

Aside from the previous mentioned fighters, I'd say Groove on Fight and any of the Asuka 120% games. Of the Fatal Furys, the Real Bout ones are tops. I had a good time with Fighters MegaMix, Anarchy in the Nippon and Dead or Alive back in the day. Some may be dated by todays standard, the 2d games seem to avoid that stigma.

Is it actually possible to cancel moves in snk games? or is it that I never found the right timing?

+1 on Fighters Mega Mix, the Real Bout Fatal Fury titles, and Dead Or Alive.

Also Last Bronx is okay. Personally I think it's kinda boring but there are alot of people who seem to like it, so give it a look.

Here's some that not everyone usually thinks of though.

-Zero Divide
-Mortal Kombat Trilogy
-Fighters History Dynamite
-Pocket Fighter, Cyberbots (I know they're Capcom but they're usually overlooked)

Waku Waku 7.

Edit: Didn't notice it in the OP, great game nonetheless.

How about the Golden Axe game (Golden Axe: The Duel)? The graphics are nice and interesting, and it is very playable. It's also a Saturn exclusive, so you wouldn't have had a chance to see this game elsewhere outside of arcades.

Make sure you get the 1 meg cart that goes with 95, if you buy it. It HAS to be the KOF95 cart, because it has sprites in it. I found one at a goodwill randomly about five years ago.
