Funspot: My trip was awesome!

Post by fvgazi »

This past weekend a group of friends and myself went up to the "legendary" Funspot of King of Kong fame. Had a fricken' blast, saw the Kieth Apicary wall, and got a few high scores (daily). I took some videos and pictures in case people were curious, plus I wanted to take a picture with Mr. Nathan Barnatt, or at least his MVS cab and poster likeness.

Best part was I dropped $20 and got 150 tokens. Lasted me for 8 hours for classic arcade madness. I still had 30 tokens leftover around 11pm to blow on ticket machines for some swag.

Here's some of the pictures. Sorry for the poor grainy cell phone quality. One of my other friends took some better pictures which I can hopefully share with you guys at some point.

My High Score.

Mmm, good times. 1942 aside from ExedExes is still a classic Capcom shmup to zone out and score well on, even though I enjoy 1943 Kai as of late too.

Nice Black Tiger cab too -- never got to play that as originally presented.

This arcade I frequent now known as Stop N Play in FL (www.stop-n-play.com) was originally owned by Funspot which is a neat piece of trivia.

I'd really like to go to Funspot someday. Maybe for the International Classic Video Game & Pinball Championships. Maybe to participate. Someday.

I fell in love with 1942! I barely gave it a try before playing it in arcades, which I guess is pretty sad coming from an avid shmup fan. It was one of the most relaxing ones I played. They put a new joystick in too, so it was very responsive. Unfortunately 1943 had sticky buttons and a worn out stick which made it unplayable.

I also got to play the arcade version of sky shark! That was fricken' sweet.

I'm glad you finally got to go, fvgazi!

Did you buy that mug and shot glass, or did you actually win enough tickets for them? If you racked up enough tickets, color me impressed. When I went last November they wouldn't sell me a mug, and I only had enough winnings to walk out with a little plastic frog.

I do love my little plastic frog, though.

I won enough tickets. It was pretty hilarious. I had like 20 or 30 tokens leftover around closing time. My friends were playing ticket games and had cashed in already. I found a game where the odds of getting a jackpot were about 50% and it went up incrementally as I won more. I got to the point where I got 950+ tickets and the machine actually ran out so they owed me. Only took about 5 minutes to accumulate. The token amount worked out to about $4.00

Best part is I technically didn't even have to pay for it. We had "free 50 tokens for every $20" coupons.

The mug was 500 tickets by itself. The shot glass + candy/cup were 250 each.

Do you remember what are they running in the MVS?

I've been to Funspot 2 or 3 times and it's always a little disappointing. For a "museum" there are a lot of games that are in dire need of joystick/button service and will eat your tokens without giving you a credit

I haven't been in a while, however, and I'm seeing some cabs I didn't see on my last visit so maybe I'll have to make a trek up there sometime soon.

STILL NOT ENOUGH 90'S ARCADE GAMES!

I know I'm being a little harsh. I really do appreciate that the place even exists at all

EDIT: Do they still have Forgotten Worlds running with the rotary joysticks? cuz that was sweeeeeeet

The MVS had Super Spy and some golf game I forgot. Sadly no Metal Slug as advertised. :(
I agree with that main complaint about games not being serviced well. I would say about 10% of the games I tried ate up some credits.

I was super sad when Twin Cobra had two broken coin slots and I couldn't even try it!!!
I will say that the arcade was surprisingly neat and mostly maintained. I imagine it's hard to get original replacement parts for the amount of cabinets they have there. Another strange thing I noticed was what looked like burn-in on some of the CRTs. Not sure if it's even possible, but I really noticed "game over" burned into the screen of rampage and a few other games.

It was definitely worth the trip to play an original R-Type cab and play Forgotten Worlds! :)
