Mom has been noticing I am buying up all the old systems, and games again. She made a comment about how I have so much stuff in my room already and that I am surrounded by stuff. I know I like to collect things, but it's mostly stuff that interests me.
I've been a gamer all my life and now recently got started into collecting. My mom sees me spending all of this money and she does not like it. She asks me why I don't just save all my money like my brother does and I let her know that he likes to drink and get all crazy with his friends and I like video games and collecting them.
My room is very clean and I try and keep it neat and organized while still letting people know I am a collector. I figure, I work 40 hours a week, and go to school, I should be able to have some sense of entertainment and joy. Now the only reason I am going to college is to please my mom and dad. Otherwise I would just work and save up tons of money on the side for a house.
Currently I live at my moms place and just bought her a brand new HDTV, surround sound, amplifier, and blu-ray player. I do not know why she is complaining about the stuff I like to collect. I think she just views it as more stuff while I view it as something meaningful.
My mom recently got divorced and is looking for a new man and asked me today well what if I find the man of my dreams and move in with him what will you do? I tell her that I will move in with them and pay rent like I am doing now until I have enough to own my own house. I do not know why this has to be such a big issue. I still save between $50-$140 for savings out of my paycheck.
I guess she is thinking I am like my brother who likes no materialistic things whatsoever and just likes to hang out with friends and drink. Well I don't have as many friends as my brother, but idc. I like what I like. I will be fine when I have enough money and buy a house. I'd say I'm doing pretty good for a 22 year old whose going to work 40 hours a week and trying to do school. I've got a 3.5pa what more do they want. Even though I withdrew from 2 classes, but that's not bad.
Sorry im venting more then I am asking a question. What would you guys say to your mom who had certain views? Oh did I mention, I pay the $200 entertainment bill as well which is our comcast high speed internet, cable, and phone, and netflix.
What to say to parents when collecting video games?
Re: What to say to parents when collecting video games?
Sit her down next to you on the couch, show her your favorite old school game, and explain to her why it makes you happy.
Ultimately, parents just want to know their kids are happy and safe. She might literally have no frame of reference to understand your hobby or love for nostalgia. Help her find it.

So you're 22 years old, living with you're parents for free, and you're upset that you're mom thinks you should save money. I betting there's an underlying issue here that has nothing to do with the video games.

Armymanis pays the entertainment bill and some utilities while going to school full time / working. It's in the last paragraph.BurningDoom wrote:So you're 22 years old, living with you're parents for free, and you're upset that you're mom thinks you should save money. Okay, so not entirely free. But still, I'm sure there's more to it than just the video games. The whole "What if I married the man of my dreams, what would you do?" comment seemed to scream that to me.Flake wrote:Armymanis pays the entertainment bill and some utilities while going to school full time / working. I think your doing a teriffic job in terms of being a responsible person, one you have your mindset and your goals clear.
Your mom should be happy that you got your head on straight, just because you play and collect old retro games doesnt make you childish or immature.
I hope someday your mom will understand and not be so bias towards a gamer.
