Why Can't Konami Seem To Do Anything With The Contra Series?

Post by Weekend_Warrior »

Remember all the amazing Contra games on the NES, SNES and Genesis...

Why the hell hasn't Konami been able to do anything worthwhile with the series since then? I mean, they've tried a few times with games on the PS1 and PS2 and those were mostly forgettable. They did have Contra 4 on the DS which at least was respectable. But with today's awesome technology why can't they seem to put together a really good TPS with online (like Gears but with improvements) or an all-new 2D side scroller that takes us all back to yesteryear but blows us away with the new graphics and sound?

I dunno. I just can't help but feel that they've been sitting on a winning hand for many years but are too lazy to ante up. And dammit, if they can't do anything cool with it then they should at least give it to someone who can! Know what I'm sayin?

Contra is a classic video game series. Everybody I know loves the old games. GIVE US SOMETHING NEW & BADASS! 8)

I haven't played it, but have you played Hard Corp: Uprising on XBLA/PSN? Or what about Contra: Rebirth?

Contra only had a reason for it being good: Level design.

Technology was enough for Contra long time ago, all it does today is blurry the screen with fireworks like in Contra: Rebirth (which was actually more like Metal Slug, but whatever). New hardware only harms Contra, it doesn't help it.

Not yet. Heard good things. But it looks like it has some Japanese anime influence or somethin'. Doesn't really look like old school "blow the shit out of everything" Contra to me.

I enjoyed it FWIW. The anime part didn't bother me near as much as the fact that all the bosses were polygonal, like shitty N64 stuff when everything else looks so good. But I digress it totally is "blow the shit out of everything" contra. Try the demo I hope you like it.

been wanting it for a while. Personally, I like the anime look. Plus it was developed by Arc Systems, which is awesome. But I've basically been waiting/hoping for a sale. I'd really prefer it be under $10.

Yeah, Hard Corps: Uprising really is great. The graphics are pretty without being gaudy and distracting, and the controls are spot-on. If the anime aesthetic puts you off, then that's your own problem.

How was Neo Contra or Shattered Soldier? I've never played them, but when I heard that Shatted Soldier was was 2D, it piqued my interest.
