What would I need to run a gaming competition?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What would I need to run a gaming competition?

Post by abeisgreat »

Well i had the idea to have a pretty small gaming compo to raise funds for a robotics team im on. I was just wondering if anyone here had done this or had any ideas of what would need to be done. I mean like what games should be played, how much should it cost to enter, what consoles, prizes blah

you need guilty gear xx (good quality arcade style controllers if u have em available)
jedi academy
halo/halo2
mario kart
super smash brothers
quake / unreal if your using computers
fear
dead or alive
i think if i were doing it i would use PC's you could use one system with mame for fighting games people could use any style controller. that way there is no crying that such and such system has a bad controller
then you could have a small network with a few first person shooters
i assume if your in a robotics club you could pry scare up a few gaming rigs
the dreamcast and xbox/360 are good too dreamcast having alot of fighters and xbox having halo and jedi academy
maybe a gamecube for mario kart and smash bros
katamari damacy would make a really good tie breaker
also consider :
someone to keep score
a prize or prizes
drawling names to chose starting matchups for fighters

the best bet is to see how many peopel are intrested in going and what kind of games they would like to play

All that sound fine for a PC gaming comp, is that what your after?

If you want some console ideas:
-DC is only good for MvC2, PS2 for everthing else.
-Real player will bring there own sticks.
-Top three game for 2D fighting is Third Strike, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Capcom vs SNK 2. The new bred is Guilty Gear AC and Arcana Hearts.
-3D world is Tekken DR and Soul Cal. 3
-Minors: Super Turbo, Melty Blood, KoF anything, and anything retro like Alpha, MK, Vampire or SamSho.
-Don't for get puzzle games: Puzzle Fighter, Magical Drop, Tetris Attack.

I don't keep up with the FPS tourney side, so whatever Duck siad, but I would not use MAME for anything (see first point)

And Smash _will_ bring in the masses, it's not my game but it does pull a lot of heads in.

Now are you running a tournament or a lan party? A tournament should be easy enough to run anywhere. The fastest way I have found is to hold a for cash Soul Calibur or Smash Brothers tournament with a $5 or $10 entry and a break down of 60,20,10, for the top three places (the other 10% going to your group obviously). Now that may not make you much money quickly as say $10 to enter and a 50,,15,5 split but you will have more repeat gamers on it and they are easy to pull off in a 2 hours span with little capital. However it may be considered gambling...

Halo will get you alot of gamers, but it is expensive to run in that most people want their own screens, or a two player split screen. Personally I like the AvP crowd of tournament gamers the most, but we are a dying breed.

In a different life I did, much like how I use to play poker. But those are stories that do not to need to be archived in any way shape or form.

Get several TVs and several Xboxen and link 'em up LAN style and run tourneys for Halo or Halo 2. I bet you'd have some takers.
