The game you came "THIS" close to beating

Hey. Have you ever come "THIS" close to beating a game, but it just didn't happen? Maybe you just couldn't beat that last boss. Or maybe your mom accidentally hit the power plug with the vacuum and you hadn't saved in hours. Any stories to share? I'll start with two.

Resident Evil 2. Now, I've beaten Resident Evil 2 numerous times, but this time was different. I wanted to do a speed run to unlock Hunk on the Dreamcast version. I played through the Leon scenario A and achieved an "A" rank with a game time of 1H 19M 37S. I was a machine. I may have saved once, if at all. I popped in Claire's disc for scenario B. Again, I plowed through the game, maybe saving once halfway through, but I don't think I saved at all. I got to the final train and sat back to watch the ending cut-scene. That's when the system froze. I couldn't believe it. I popped open the top, wiped the disc and closed it, but it was too late. There was no helping it. It took a lot of strength to turn the system off. I never re-attempted that B run.

Parasite Eve. Shorter story. I made it to the final boss, but kept dying. I eventually stopped trying and somewhere down the line, my memory card got wiped out and I just forgot all about it.

Ninja Gaiden on the xbox. I made to to the final boss but kept dying. I think I had saved at the wrong time so I was short on potions or something like that. Anyways, I got so frustrated I quite trying for a while. I went back and tried again a few months later but was way too rusty. Still to this day I regret not beating it because it is a fun and challenging game.

Mercenaries, for oXbox. I made it halfway through the last level, and I hated that final level so much that I've never bothered going back to beat it. I've restarted several times since, and I always stop playing once it's time for that last level.

I have grown fond of SNK over Capcom fighters and one of the best feelings while playing a game is beating a SNK boss (most likely Rugal).

I love KOF96, 98 and NG Battle Colleseum.. but can't beat any of them yet.

Like noise, there's some fighting games where I can reach the final boss but then I get destroyed.

Every time I play Operation C I seem to make it 3/4th of the way through the final stage before my lives/continues run out.

This might be pretty lame, but I could never get past the Death Star trench run level in the JVC Star Wars for the Game Boy. I only ever beat the Death Star interior once, but I immediately died in the trench run which results in an instant game over. Since I was about 7, I just gave up and moved on to other games. I eventually sold all my old games along with my Game Boy pocket off for a pittance in a yard sale.

Cut to twelve years later on my 19th birthday, where my parents out of nowhere got me an old red Game Boy Pocket, Tetris and Star Wars. They said they had always felt guilty about letting me get rid of my old one. I immediately sat down and powered through Star Wars and finally beat it. That was probably the greatest I've ever felt after beating a game.

I realize that since I actually beat the game, it's kinda disqualified for the topic, but this game schooled me as a kid and it took over a decade for me to finally beat it as an adult.

The most recent one I could think of is when I was playing Chrono Trigger I made it to the very end when you meet up with Lavos, I have gone through the first 2 stages, but the 3rd stage I pretty much got murdered numerous times, I mean yes, I could just get out of it once I beat the first stage, but I don't want to back out, grind some more because I knew if I backed out now, I would have to go through the first stage of Lavos all over again, call it laziness, but I was just too exhausted to push myself like that. But I needed a break, so I will come back around whenever I get the chance, like I do with other games I ever owned.
