Dreamcast-branded plastic security cases

Post by SoulDreamX »

Hey there! I'm new around here, so I hope I'm posting this in the right spot. I'm a big game memorabilia collector and collect games a little more casually. I had a question about the packaging on some Dreamcast games my boyfriend is currently selling on eBay, and a friend of mine pointed me over to this forum to see if I could get some more information on it.

He's got these two sealed Dreamcast games (Chu Chu Rocket and Time Stalkers) in this plastic security packaging. We think they may have been sold this way at Toys R Us at some point. I'm not sure when, exactly, though the copy of Chu Chu Rocket is the later print with the non-pixelated screenshots on the back.

We were curious if there's any interest in this packaging variant or if the value is the same as any other sealed copy of the game. Neither game is uncommon or anything, but I hadn't seen the packaging style before. If anyone knows more about this packaging, we'd love to hear. He'd like to update his auction listing to be more accurate, and I'm just really curious. :)

Here are some pictures of what I'm talking about:

Interesting. I don't remember seeing packages like that, though I was pretty much only playing PC games at the time.

these guys are probably bargain bin games.

Theres another upc sticker over the orginal ones. Another company or retailer have them repackaged that way, all the barcodes are pretty much the same. When its rung up at the register the same price comes up regardless of the game.

Kinda like right now with bundled ps2 or wii games.

They probably say "Great Games at Great Prices"

with a generic $14.99 or $19.99 price point.

I dont know if the current packaging affects its prices tho. It really depends on the person buying it. Are they gonna play it or are they gonna have it graded?

If there is another barcode covering the actual one on the game, type it into google to check. The real barcode should pull up the correct item.

I hate blister packs but those certainly look cool.

I may be crazy but when I was younger I think I may have seen them packaged like that once. This is definitely not certain, but I feel there's a certain familiarity with them. It was around when the Dreamcast was on it's way out and I was looking at them in the store (I think). Never bought one though. I liked my PS2.

Again, my mind may be playing tricks on me. I did go to Toys R Us for games when I was that age though.
Older. Not wiser.

That is pretty cool packaging. For the right price I'd buy a game like that for display only, it would just look neat hanging next to my game shelf.

Thanks for the replies, guys! It would make sense if they were released toward the end of the Dreamcast's life. I didn't even think about them being good candidates for being graded.

My boyfriend's already got them up on eBay, though if Chu Chu Rocket doesn't sell, I wouldn't mind hanging that one up for display along with some of my other Sonic Team stuff. :)

He's got them up with low starting bids, though, if anyone's interested, since he needs the cash and is trying to clear some stuff out before we move. Personally, I'm just hoping that they end up in the hands of other collectors.

I posted the auctions here: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 48&t=36283

Thanks again!

I remember similar packaging in EB Games back in the day. They had a game + white vmu packaged in a blister pack. I think they were $19.99 (I bought Time Stalkers and Tokyo Xtreme Racer that way).
