Yu Suzuki appreciation thread

Post by Erik_Twice »

While it isn't as obvious as my love for musical or economical games, the truth is that I respect Yu Suzuki's games a lot. I didn't really knew much about him until I played OutRun 2 but when I did, it blew me away.

While not as well known as my love for musical and economical games, the truth is that I really love the games Yu Suzuki made. Since I first playe OutRun 2 at the arcade I have had a growing respect for the man, who I don't think is quite appreciated as much as he should. People think he was someone important at Sega and know the names but don't really know his games.

What I really like about him is not that he makes good games, it's that they are undeniably his games. There's something terribly personal about them that I can't see in any other designer. Most of his most-well known games have very specific premises. Space Harrier is the most obvious example but just the setting of Shenmue is carefully chosen, there's nothing generic or expected about it, it directly steems from the creator and you can see his hands in all aspects of his games. It's simply wonderful.

What do you think? :)

Yu Suzuki rocks, Sega rocks
I wish the original Out Run would get a HD remake. Meaning HD 2D sprites coming at you at 60 fps. Can you imagine

 That would be a bit of a backwards way to do things but it'd have its charm. Though it's probably not happening sorry. Racing games are perhaps one of the genres which have gained the most from 3D graphics (case in point, Mario Kart 7 being one of the best examples of the 3D on the 3DS being useful)

Shenmue and Outrun 2 are in my top 10 games and have spent hundreds of hours on both. I grew up on the MS and Genesis but I wasn't really into his early games. But there is definitely something special about the games he makes, a certain charm.

When I think of game designers who have done many classic series, it's only Miyamoto and Suzuki who spring to mind. Now it's teams of hundreds making games, which is a shame as a new Suzuki or Miyamoto game would get me hyped more than a new "Nintendo" or "Sega" game.

He's made some of my favorite games. Space Harrier is one of my favorite 80s arcade games. Virtua Fighter blew my mind the first time I played and the series is one of the few 3D fighting titles that I honestly enjoy playing.

Even though he didn't finish Shenmue, it's great that Sega allowed him to work on such a then-unprecedented massive, ambitious project.

Space harrier is one of my favorites too, especially the motion chair! Compared to other motion cabs, the chair really responded to the direction you pushed the stick. Genius how Yu Suzuki incorporated "Flight Motion" with the chair while moving around on the screen. I have not played Planet Harriers which really needs a console port. Oh and the Space Harrier chair too please.

Yeah I know, yet if you play the Saturn version of Out Run, with the 60fps option, something magical happens. I´m just curious what it would be like if they redid the graphics in like 720p or 1080p. Never say never. Indeed racing games are a few of the genres that gained from 3D graphics, yet I bet there isn´t one 2D racing game with a resolution of 480p or higher. I want to see 2D HD graphics coming at me at 290MPH at 60fps. Let´s start a petition! just kidding.
Currently playing HOTDIII with a Sharp Shooter of which I saw of the part which holds the navigation move controller or whatever it´s called. SEGA 4 life.
