Must have ps2 accessories

Post by Kahokian »

Okay I looked through the topics and couldnt find one that exactly pinpointed what I am trying to get out of this. What are the must have ps2 accessories to get the most out of your ps2 gaming experience. When the ps2 came out I was still fairly poor and honestly was kinda out of the whole gaming scene. Recently I have got back into the swing of things and have been having a blast playing all genres of the ps2 library. Besides the memory card, multitap, av cables etc...what are some of the unique or must have accessories out there I will need to get the most out of my ps2>>>????

There aren't any, really. If you have a fat PS2, a network adaptor used to be a must-have, but I don't think there are many (if any) PS2 games still online. If you're going to play Guitar Hero, a guitar controller is needed. And s-video or component cables are much nicer than standard composite cables.

its been a few years and I still cant find one complete (at fleamarkets)

but the logitec wireless controllers were pretty nice.

that or any extension cord would do nicely.

Thats what I figured I was just making sure, I snagged up Pelican Predator wireless controller for the 5 piece at my local pawn shop and honestly I like it better than my Logitech for some odd reason.

there are PS2 games still online: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... ps2+online

@OP:

You'll want a fightpad if you're into fighting games. I suggest the Street Fighter II anniversary pads.

A good arcade stick ...Hori made a lot of them.

Swap Magic can easily open you up to the world of amazing PS2 imports.

Have someone help make you a FreeMcBoot memory card so you can get into homebrew.

And wireless controllers are great. The Pellican is what I use. There's Logitech's that people like, but both of the ones I bought seemed to have terrible battery life. The official Sony Katana's look amazing, but they're expensive.

If you like racing games, there's good force feedback racing wheels out there.

Forget online games, the network adapter is necessary to install a hard drive in the PS2. Then you can use a hard drive loader to boot games from the hard drive. Preserve your discs, preserve your optical drive, and get faster loading times! In my opinion, and many others, if you have a fat PS2 than this is definitely what you want to be doing.

Must have accessories:

network adapter
hard drive
memory card with Free MC boot installed, or at least a HD Loader disc

Awesome suggestions guys thanks. I definetly am going to look into this whole hard drive ordeal. It sounds like a no brainer. Do you know where I could possibly get all 3 items at one store or location? So i just have to pay shipping for one order?

As far as the memory card goes, as always, I only suggest using an official Sony memory card. Third party cards are unreliable. You need to have some one install the Free MC Boot onto the card for you though, or install it yourself if you're able. Your other option to boot games from the hard drive would be to use a retail product like HD Advance, but Free MC Boot is free and the hard drive loader Open PS2 Loader (OPL for short) is new and has more features. You don't need an additional memory card for Free MC Boot, but it's more desirable, especially if you have a lot of game saves.

You'll most likely have to get a used network adapter and memory card, unless you can find new old stock, so eBay is probably the easiest way to find these items. As for the hard drive, you need a PATA 3.5" drive. SATA drives have pretty much phased out PATA drives, but you can still get them new from some retailers. New Egg has some. You could also go the used route, or take one from an old computer you might have lying around. But remember, you're storing game images on this drive, so the larger the drive the better. A 30GB you might find in some old Windows 98 computer is a little too small. I have an 80GB in mine which isn't too bad, but a larger one would be nice. The larger the drive, the more games you can fit onto it.

Be aware, not all hard drives are directly compatible with the PS2 network adapter. There are compatibility lists out there. It's not that a hard drive wont work with the adapter, it's just that the connections don't line up. I think Western Digitals are likely to fit. I recall reading about being able to modify the network adapter to accommodate a hard drive that wont fit. Perhaps some one has a link handy with more info.
