I've been working on this model 1 sega cd today and for some reason it won't play games but it will play music cds.
It just sits at the screen with the trippy sega cd screen. When a game disc is put in it just sits there and spins it.
Any ideas?

The folks over at digitpress suggest changing the laser if a simple cleaning won't do it.

I suppose you could also try adjusting the laser's pot (if it has one).

I already did the cleaning. I guess I could check if they have a pot.Jontendo wrote:The folks over at digitpress suggest changing the laser if a simple cleaning won't do it.

Re: Sega CD Model 1 Won't Play Games
It's a last-ditch, and I'd recommend measuring the resistance across the pot with an ohm meter before adjusting. Go for small increments and retest until (hopefully) it focuses and begins to read.
The tiny pots are very touchy so try to be gentle.
They can become next to impossible get locked onto a stable resistance if adjusted too much.
And even still, you may need to do a final adjustment once the system has warmed up as this can throw the pot value off a little bit too.

Are you playing actual pressed games, or are they games on cd-r?
The Sega CD is known to be picky with burned media. It's worth picking up a pack of (non-value) Taiyo Yuden cd-rs.
