Names On Carts

Post by flojocabron »

This is not a thread on how to remove names on carts.

But on why names are on carts.

Did you mark them? Or did a parent when you were little? Did you do it to all your games or just the ones that were most important to you?

When you find one, does it bring back memories? An old friend that left a game with you, a hand me down of an older system given to you? A mistake that you now regret?

Do you still own some of these games or have you replaced them over the years?

When you find a game named by someone else, does it have a certain type of charm to it? Do you leave it be, or try to do something more?

Or when you see a game like this, thats been personalized, does it make you think....Who was the person that owned this before me? Did they beat the game? Did they lose this game or out grow it?

There are lots of possiblilites and opinions in a thread like this. Go ahead and give your two cents.

Hmm I wonder who Amy is, and if she beat this game before I got it? :?

I always wondered why people wrote names on the front of the cart instead of the back that and then there are those that carve there name into the cart i always thought the people that did this asumed the would never get rid of there treasured games i also like the manuals that have notes and codes scrawled in a childs hand writing

Some issue of Nintendo Power came with some stickers where there was a blank to put one's name followed by some cheesy phrase. So I have a few old NES games with stickers that say:

DAVID CHALLENGES YOU
DAVID POWER PRO
MVP DAVID MOST VICTORIOUS PLAYER

I have several used PS1 games with the letter P written in marker on either the game disc or booklet. The weird thing is, I didn't buy all these games at one place, some were from stores and some I got off the internet. Wonder if this was some rental store code or something.

And I do have some random old used carts with names written on them. My copy of Contra says SALZMAN in giant letters running vertically up the side. Thanks a lot Salzman!

I never did this, and I never understood why people do it. It has to be a kid's "this is mine!" thing.

I do have a couple of used games that have the previous owner's name though. My copy of PSO on the Dreamcast for instance, has forever been marked "ANDY" on the disc. It annoys the crap out of me honestly, but I've had it for years and never replaced it. I suppose I just got used to it. It's "mine" now, heh.

What's funny is apparently it doesn't just happen here. I have a super famicom game where some japanese kid wrote their name (or something else, I wouldn't know) on the front in kanji. :P

Maybe tomorrow I'll post a picture of it and one of our japanese speakers might be kind enough to tell me what the name is. I've always wondered.

Maybe it's a curse to be applied to the next person to own the cart.

Wouldn't surprise me.

If frogs start falling from the sky in Denver tomorrow, you'll know why.

I always picture a kid's mom telling them to write their name on the game before taking it over to a friend's house or something. haha

I personally don't and never have written my name on a game cartridge. I don't like obnoxious writing on my games but it isn't really a deal breaker when it comes to whether or not I'll purchase something. Just depends on what kind of game it is. N64 carts, for example, are pretty easy to clean up. NES carts are too easy to mess up because they're textured. Idk, I'm not as anal as I used to be about that kind of stuff though.

I have some NES carts with names on them - why they write names on the front rather than the back is beyond me. But the real kicker is PS1 and old PC games. A lot of my PS1 games have 4-digit numbers on them for some reason. Bushido Blade 2 has 2301 written on the disc and I will never forgive whoever put it there :P

Old PC games, anything goes: Names, phone numbers, "Pizza $15," CD keys (at least that sort of makes sense) and, of course, "Will you go out with me?"

Yes, I have an old racing game that says that. I lent it to a friend once and when she read the disc, she sent me this heartfelt message about how we should always be friends but she doesn't feel that way about me. Funny thing is I didn't know about it and it wasn't my handwriting. Now that I think about it it would be a pretty subtle way to ask someone out.

Did you get those games at a pawn shop?

Some resellers mark the discs/case with a number and put the case out on their sales floor. That way when someone buys it, they check the number on a cd binder. They dont have the game out on the floor and it prevents it from being stolen.

I have some dvds like this. The case on the inside has a number and I saw the binder the guy at the pawn shop had. But the discs weren't marked thankfully.

but yours do and that sucks :(
