Mythical Norm for Continues

Post by scarper »

So I recently started playing Strikers 1945 on my Sega Saturn, and before long, I noticed that it had unlimited continues.

I didn't wanna simply burn through the whole game and just be done with it. That's no fun at all. There had to be some kind of limit. I decided that since I'd probably spend about 2 extra quarters for continues in an arcade game, thats how many I would limit myself to. Two continues. This is negating that fact that I must have spent 3 dollars playing a japanese Strikers 1945 II arcade machine. I probably won't see one of those anywhere in the states ever again.

How do you guys deal with unlimited continues? Strikers 1945 seems so loose, you could pretty much make up your own rules. I'll definitely be doing survival runs and hardest difficulty playthroughs later on.

I usually try for a 4cc run ($1) in most shmups if I want to see the ending and don't think I'll ever get there on one quarter. Otherwise, when playing for score, it's 1cc only. Some of my favorite shmups impose a credit limit or let you earn them (Ikaruga, Crimzon Clover, Lords of Thunder, etc). These I can genuinely feel like I earned the credits screen, even without a 1cc.

C'mon, don't be that guy.

@ OP

I deal with this problem a lot myself, and not just in SHMUPS. Pretty much any arcade style game leaves me with a bit of doubt.

Part of the problem, for me, is establishing a goal for the game. Obviously, the first goal is to have fun with the game. But after that...? To get better at the game, to master the game, to see the final screen, or just to kill time? That's an answer that definitely changes from game to game.

I think the question grows even more difficult when you take into account games with adjustable difficulty.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I'll check out the linked thread, but in the case of Strikers 1945, I played it in a movie theater all the time and I think the score resets when you continue (like many shooters) so I just played it once and logged the score on the high list.

Love the Engrish in that game.

the first time I play through a shmup, I'll use all the continues they give me (even if unlimited). My first goal is just to see the credits. After that it's my goal to improve, so after that I might limit my continues -- or more likely, see how far I can make it on without continuing.

I have a hard time with shmups so I tend to shy away from games that don't have unlimited continues. :?

"That" guy, huh? Did you happen to mean "helpful guy?"
scarper asked a legitimate question and I linked him to a thread of relevant opinions, Flake. I honestly don't see what's so deplorable about that. I suppose most would rather answer the same questions over and over to pad their bloated post counts.

For me, it depends on how much I like the game, and how fun its scoring system is.

With Cave stuff, I only use 1 credit. For me, it makes finally getting past a tough stage so rewarding.

Then again, I dont really get tired of the earlier stages in their games, and beating my old score is always a do-able challenge.

If you want to use credits, but not an infinite amount, Id say start with 4 in a harder shmup. Once you clear it, lower your limit. Then, once you are more used to the game, you can work on scoring if it sounds fun.
