Halo 3 review from a trusted source (IMO)

Post by marurun »

I found what is a glowing and informative review of Halo 3's multiplayer component. It makes it sound quite interesting.

Ars is always informative. I like how they reviewed the campaign and multi separately.

The Ugly: Trying to deal with PC gamers who swear up and down you’re not actually having fun playing this game.
That's me.

Its a a good review of multiplayer. I'd agree with all of that, except I don't think Forge is quite that cool, and I think matchmaking isn't quite that bad. In fact matchmaking has never been this good - and will be even better after Bungie inevitably gets around to tweaking the playlists.

Mozgus's review had me laughing pretty hard. Funny stuff. In many ways the reviewer is on target with the single-player campaign being fairly average. So far, about 50% though, I have had alot more fun than in the whole of Bioshock though...

I wish Bungie would have had the balls to make Halo 3 *multi-player only*. This is what Halo is good at. They should have concentrated there, instead of working on a storyline that was never good even from Halo 1. But this is a business, and Bungie knows that their ticket to huge $ is the single-player.

Honestly, I don't consider any one a "trusted source" for a game review. I gather whatever info I can from multiple reviews and then try to form my opinion based on what I know about gaming and whatever usual tell tale signs I can gleam from the various reviews I read.

Really though, the only "trusted source" is myself, which is why I just went out and rented it to see for myself if it lived up to the hype, which it didn't. Hardly any game does these days. I think the last game I can remember that I think truly lived up to its hype was Resident Evil 4. A damn near perfect, polished, replay filled, action packed, cinematic game that FINALLY addressed many of the series' complaints.

Of course, now I'm sure someone is going to come on here and tell my how overrated RE 4 is

Honestly though, why do we all read reviews anyway? Why do we even NEED reviewers? Can't we all just rent before we buy? Seriously, sometimes I think critics and reviewers are getting paid for what is an essentially pointless job. Only you can judge how good a game is, and I know I can't think of even one single reviewer out there that I completely agree with. So inevitably, I have to try before I buy. Or(and I do this a lot these days)find some youtube videos. I can usually tell immediately from gameplay footage whether or not I'm going to like something. I bought Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks after watching a gameplay video for it and I never regretted the purchase

Ok, I'll take that challenge!

(takes a deep breath and gets ready to let fly...)

Nah :) Don't have the energy to rant tonight for some reason.

I like reviews for general info about the game. And for weeding out the true stinkers. Its very rare that a game that gets less than 7 on Gamespot turns out to be excellent in my eyes. But often a game that gets 9 is only decent, or 7.5 is truly excellent. So those that fall underneath 7 I can safely ignore for the most part.

And as for renting, while I rented thousands of games as a kid and teenager I rarely do anymore. I'm not sure exactly why. It just seems a hassle. I just prefer to research good games and buy them. I also prefer to finish games at a 'relaxed' pace now, not rushed to bring them back to the store.

I will say that I value a few friends 'word of mouth' much more than any online reviews though...

I hardly rent games much anymore, either. I did as a kid, but don't seem to want to bother with it now.

I usually go to metacritic and check out the average of multiple reviews to give a good picture.

I do like being able to download demos on the 360.

I was wondering how many post it would take veets to show up in.

On the subject of reviews, I will read over a few of them if it is a game I have never heard of or seen videos for. But I will say the games I have enjoyed the most are the ones I have gone out on a limb on - Cubivore, Koronripa, Monkey Ball, Tetris Battle Gaiden, Wrecking Crew 98, Xplane, the list goes on.
