Zelda-like games.

Post by AppleQueso »

Golden Axe Warrior being the Together Retro game for this month got me thinking about what other Zelda clones are probably out there.

I'm sure we all know of huge ones like Okami and 3D Dot Game Heroes, but there surely must be plenty of others. I want to hear about them, especially if they're actually good!

IIRC, Beyond Good & Evil and Darksiders have been called Zelda-esque games.

Neutopia for Turbografx is very definitely a Zelda Clone. Other games that I can think of that are definitely zelda-ish (but not necessarily clones) include the Beyond Oasis series on Mega Drive & Saturn, and Golvellius on Master System. I think half the gameplay of Guardian Legend on NES is like Zelda too, but the other half is a shmup.

Though the series is a side scroller more like Zelda II all of the Wonder Boy (well after the first one) are great action RPGs

Noise already mentioned FFA/Seiken Densetsu (and the other titles in the Action-RPG franchise comes close) and AlienJesus covered a bunch more (though I would argue that TGL is an action/adventure/RPG, it's not the same melee/fantasy that Zelda was).

From that other board...

Quintet's Soul Blader trilogy on the SNES (and GranStream Saga on the PSX)
Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia (Time), Terranigma

Crusader of Centy (GEN) is an excellent spiritual successor to Golden Axe. (Well, spiritual that you can squee at the fanservice moments.)

Nintendo's own Star Tropics series mirror various Zelda games.

SNK's excellent Crystalis one-shot. (Ignore the NST remake on the GBC.)

And don't forget the Ys series. (Ys III resembles Zelda II in a few ways.)
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.
