Help with KoF/SNK games

Post by Cantrellio »

In the past I've mostly played Street Fighter/Capcom fighters and I would like to get better at KoF/SNK fighters. I know that there are a lot of fighter fans here and I've read comments about the difference in strategy and gameplay between Capcom and SNK fighters.

So, what are some of the differences/what should I begin with/what strategies should I take (I mostly play single player against the AI)?

Right now, I have KoF 2002 and Garou:MoW on XBLA. I play with a SF4 pad. One of the reasons that I am trying to get better with SNK games is that my favorite fighter is Capcom vs. SNK 2 and I'm not that good with many SNK characters. I think one of the reasons for this is that many of the SNK characters in Cv.S2 are kind of weak and of course the game was developed by Capcom.

I would just like to add that my dream game would be a HD remake of Capcom vs. SNK 2 with handrawn sprites, all the stages from Cvs.S 1 added in (and maybe a couple of new ones), a few of the crazier characters from Darkstalkers, MoW, Mvs.C2, or Samurai Showdown added in, and some new moves added to some of the weaker characters.

Thanks for your help

Try to learn some combos with your favorite characters, set the games to the hardest difficulty.

MOW is an awesome and pretty technical fighting game, stick to a few characters and learn their moves. (My favorite character is Terry. Obviously)

I know this is kind of a tough question but what I would like to know is what's the difference that I take in a SNK/KoF versus a Capcom/SF game?

I went through this. The easiest thing to do is erase everything you know about Capcom games. SNK games are not even kind of the same.

Pick three characters you want to get to know, and learn all their moves. After that, learn to string some combos together.

But seriously, do not try to play an SNK game like a Capcom game. You're not learning a new fighter, you're learning a whole new system.

Yeah, the main reason I want to learn some of the KoF/SNK tactics is so that I can use them out in Cvs.S2. I've used some of Iori's but I would like to get better at others such as Beni, Kim, and Kyo.

I think I am coming to the conclusion that I just like Capcom fighters better but still, I would like to expand my fighing strategies and not get stuck in a rut.

Your concept in trying to learn the SNK roster in CVS2 is flawed. You can't really use what you learned in games like KOF and MOW and transfer that to the respective character roster in CVS2. Ultimately the game is a capcom game to the core, it just has SNK characters in it. SNK charaters have some of their trademark attacks sure, but it's under a different playbook (capcoms signature gameplay). You gotta use these characters like they where in a capcom game... this is essentially what's going on!

In my experience these are two very solid pieces of advice. Personally I prefer Capcom's fighters, and I'm not very good at SNK fighters (with the exception of Samurai Shodown games), but it's a fact that they're very different beasts. Unfortunately I can't really give you too much advice, because as I said I'm not very good at SNK fighters, but just approach the games with an open mindset.

When playing, try to forget about your Street Fighter mindset and act as if you're re-learning fighters. I had to do the same thing when I was first turned onto Arc fighters, so I know how the transition can be strange.

Rolls - Learn when their invincibility starts and when it ends. Abuse it. Rolls have different properties in each game.

Defensive attacks - Done by pressing both hard punch and hard kick together while blocking a connected attack. It takes one meeter but it is essential to know when to use it to put a hole in your attacker's corner traps. Learn it or die quickly.

Defensive rolls - Done by pressing weak punch and weak kick together while blocking a connected attack. This also eats a meeter but renders your completely invincible in most KOFs. Use it to get behind your opponent when he has you in the corner.

And lastly, learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

learn the 4 different jumps.

Practice them. Program the timing into your muscle memory.

...oh and watch THIS.

...uh and THIS.
