I'm surprised there isn't already a topic about this, or at least if there is I didn't see it. I ripped the region-lock tabs out of my SNES today and I was wondering what games were worth my time and money. I heard that the Famicom version of Super Metroid has an identical chip to the American version; is this true? It's a bit cheaper to get the Famicom one. Are there any other games that this is the case for?
I'm also a bit confused about PAL imports... I'd love to play Terragnigma, but it sounds like it's a real pain in the ass to get running.
SNES imports
Re: SNES imports
Crap, I put in a line about that but forgot to put it back in when I was rewording my post. No, I can not, and I rather dislike it when I don't know what's going on.

Re: SNES imports
some games aren't text heavy and you can guess to what it means on the menu screen.
If you played US snes and find the same game JP, you can still play it off memory.
Back in the day (and still now) you would go to gamefaqs and get fan made guides and play by play storylines for that game that never got released here.
Some are purists and only play this way and some go the emulated route.
Before this goes into a crazy rom debate, go ahead and play it emulated and see if you really want it original JP. That way you wont be dissapointed incase you buy a less than stellar game.
Like some little plastic bit is gonna stop us from playing an import!

Re: SNES imports
There are multiple threads about this very topic. Search Super Famicom instead of SNES imports and you'll find them.
Re: SNES imports
Yeah, there's a few threads with lots of SFC suggestions in them.
When you rip out the "region tabs" you can play SFC carts because they have the same lockout chip that NTSC-U (North American) carts have. Now that the tabs are ripped out, you can also insert a PAL SNES cart, but they wont boot for one or two reason. Reason number one, which is always gonna be true, is that they have a different lockout chip. Even when you get around the lockout chip, there can also be a region check in the game data (it checks to see if the console is running in 50 or 60 Hz).
If you imported a PAL Terranigma cart, you will not be able to play it on your console as of now. What most people do is modify the SNES with two switches. One switch will turn the lockout chip on and off, the other will choose between 50 and 60 Hz so you can trick certain games. Like Terranigma, you would have to turn the lockout chip off and start in 50 Hz when you power the game on. After a second, you can then switch to 60 Hz and continue playing. I don't know if there's any import adapters out there that will work. I don't see how and import adapter could get around the 50/60Hz check.

Re: SNES imports
I'd get Rockman & Forte/ Megaman and Bass, only the GBA version came to America, which had a very limited field of view, poorer music, and downgraded graphics. Story is far from important in it, and a little guess and check can let you know what the upgrades do.

Re: SNES imports
I could list a ton, but since there are tons of threads about this and I'm lazy, I'll just say check out the Yu Yu Hakusho fighters. Not text heavy and really fun.
What? This is inaccurate. It's called Rockman & Forte. "Rockman no Forte" makes no sense in Japanese. "no"/の means "of".GameMasterGuy wrote:I'd get Rockman no Forte

Re: SNES imports
I love how the SFC counterparts are dirt cheap, for example:
You can buy this fabulous complete in box SFC Chrono Trigger for $10
http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHRONO-TRIGGER- ... 45fed56088
and... you can buy this outrageous SNES copy for the grand total of $169
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrono-Trigger- ... 256a710b2c
Im going to assume that Japanese people arent big into collecting like we Westerners are.
