I recently purchased a Sega Nomad. I have never played one before so I have a few questions. Is the battery pack required if I want to play portable? What purpose does the AC Adapter serve?
That would kind of suck if I need the battery pack to play on the go. They seem to be quite pricey.
Also, would the game gear battery pack work? They seem to be a bit cheaper.

Re: Sega Nomad Questions
those used NiCad batteries from a few years back.
and no battery lasts forever.
Being almost a decade old those batteries are useless. Original battery packs are now a fancy sega paperweight.
You can use AA batteries but the nomad will eat them quickly.
You can use a plug from a genesis 2 with the yellow tip for plugging into the wall.
I suppose you can use an inverter adapter if you ever want to use it when in a car.
but not when you're driving, thats a no-no.

Re: Sega Nomad Questions
So it needs a battery pack in order to be portable? Bummer. They are going for like half the cost of the actual nomad. Crazy.

No, you can use AA batteries, it just eats through them. Buy rechargeable ones and save yourself some money in the long run.

Re: Sega Nomad Questions
I'm a bit confused. I know there is two different types of battery packs. One is a "PowerBack" which lets you recharge and the other is just a battery pack that holds 6 double AA batteries. You're saying I don't need either one? You can put batteries in the nomad itself without any pack, just like a gameboy?KDub wrote:No, you can use AA batteries, it just eats through them. Re: Sega Nomad Questions

kid....
back in the day when there were no lithium ion recharable 5volt battery paks!
We had to use six 1.5v sticks to make our stuff work.
why are you gonna spend 8 bucks on some energizers that will only last you 3 hours? Over and over again.
Yeah its that much of an energy guzzler! Same thing with the Game Gear.
Like the guy before said, you can use recharable AA batteries. But you'll still be recharging them a lot.
Just go ahead and use the plug. If you dont have one you can find one easily.
You're better off with this essential part.

Re: Sega Nomad Questions
I don't think you're understanding my question. I have the AC Adapter plug, but I want to play portable so I will need batteries. I just want to know if the nomad needs any kind of add-on/battery pack to use batteries or is the AA battery holder built in to the nomad(like gameboys)? Just looking for a simple yes or no answer. I'm pretty sure you need a battery pack, I just want to be sure. The packs are expensive.flojocabron wrote:

The whole reason I bought a nomad was so I can play portably. I don't want to always have to use the AC Adapter.
Edit - Let me clarify. By portable I mean no wires attached, just running on batteries, so I can go anywhere with it.

Re: Sega Nomad Questions
Lol! Sorry to butt in but it's clear everyone in this thread gets what your question is "Perfectly"! You just don't seem to get the answer! But the answer is YES! You can use standard AA batteries just like a gameboy. The batter pack is just an alternative! You don't need it for On-the-GO play. You just need AA batteries. Hope that's clear for you son.
Re: Sega Nomad Questions
Heh, so here's the deal. To be portable you have the following options:
1: Rechargeable battery pack - 99% are going to be useless and not hold a charge.
2: A regular battery pack - opens up and holds normal AAA batteries, more logical than trying to get a rechargeable pack but runs through them fast.
With out either of these options you are stuck to a wall with a a/c adapter.
Hope this makes sense.

Re: Sega Nomad Questions
You can get someone to mod your nomad with a newer camcorder like battery. There is a guy on benheck forums who will mod the battery and do an lcd screen upgrade for 80$. I just sent mine off, and can let everyone know what I think of it when it returns, but I hear they are awesome and must have upgrades.
But yes, you do need the clip on battery pack for the nomad that houses AA batteries in order to use those batteries. It will drain them so quick however that it really wont be worth using it that way imo. To me the option is either plug into the wall or get the battery upgrade mod./
