This is a question i've asked my self a bit lately as I've noticed most thrift stores / pawn shops seem to throw a very low price on sega items (which is good, but its never anything good) but I'm curious as to why stores don't want sega items or feel they are worth significantly less than other systems. An example being sega games being priced at about $1 and a nintendo games being a flat $3-5.
There any sort of history i'm missing or is this just based on bad experiences the stores may have had? I'm aware that theres a lot of garbage games but there are equally as many for the NES as well but those appear to be treated as gold.
Anyone else noticed this in their area?

not to sure but I think its based on size and color.
Genesis games are similarly shaped to atari 2600 games.
just follow me ok.
Many thrift store sellers see genesis games and lump them with 2600 games. Small and black. Therefore they are close to a couple bucks.
Nes games are larger than genesis games, and have that gray color. So therefore SNES games are considered Nintendo games and therfore cost more.
Some thrift stores may be run by older persons and their first contact with games is the first gen games from way back when.
Also some stores think that no one will buy these old systems and games and therefore price them lower in fear of there being too much stuff in the store and not enough being sold.
Kind of like LP records they stick around forever and dont sell very constantly.
But we are retrogamers and we love this stuff.

Nintendo is pretty much synonymous with video games. Even people who know nothing about video games knows what a Nintendo is.

I can understand this from 1st party vendors like retailers of new goods. But thrift stores? Most get this stuff for free. So I figure they wouldn't have the same experience, plus most workers know nothing about video games as they flat price everything.

Eh, I think the stores around here even sell 2600 stuff for more than genesis stuff. Mostly because people remember the NES and 2600 and think oooh ahh, that must be rare because I never see them.

Re: Do 2nd Hand Stores Dislike Genesis Items?
Random people who still have that one NES in storage are likely to buy a few NES carts for 3 bucks each. People who want Sega stuff are actually people who look for it.
To put it simply NES items have the potential to move much faster.

This makes sense, all pooled together as ancient "Atari" games. The Thrift store not keen on older cart games as a Retro store would be.

Re: Do 2nd Hand Stores Dislike Genesis Items?
The Sega Brand unfortunately plays second fiddle to all the other brands. Even the Genesis which had a decent amount of success. The flea markets around me generally carry NES or Atari 2600 games and items. Sometimes this can work to our advantage as if your lucky you can run into a NIB Dreamcast, Saturn etc for just $30. Thats on the rare occasion that they carry anything Sega related. About 3 weeks ago i stop by a Retro Video game booth at local flea market and asked if they had any Saturn merchandise. The guy looked at me like i was asking if he had a spare Kidney for sale, shrugged and nodded no. He seemed kind of piss that I even asked. This particular guy just had 75% SNES, games some NES games.
Curtsy when you walk by that Dreamcast
