Thinking about getting a 360 for shmups

Hey guys, I'm looking at picking up a 360 for shmups and some other stuff I missed while playing my ps3. Is it worth it? I know there's a large list of region free games and I really wanna pick up the Deathsmiles bundle from newegg for cheap.

I highly recommend a NTSC-J 360. You're missing out on a majority of the good shmups with a US console.

Yes. If you go with an American 360, there are several shmups that are region free.

Although I do have to say lately many smaller American publishing houses are making great strides getting Japanese shmups (and many other niche/anime titles) over here -- I am reminded of Raiden IV for example.

i disagree that you are missing out on many shmups with a US console. I can only think of 2 or 3 Japanese releases that won't play on my 360, and none of them are ones I'm SUPER sad I'm missing.

I would be sad to lose Ketsui and DOJ, but honestly a US console still gives you access to some great shmups. I started with a us console, and only made the change because I HAD TO try Ketsui and DOJ.

I think a us console would keep you entertained for quite some time.

Yeah I'd say go with a US 360. Missing out on a few titles of course but not too many.

Also, if you know someone in Japan, you can get a NTSC-J 360 with no HDD for dirt cheap.

Ok cool thanks for your opinions. Now I'm seeing the prices for muchi muchi and pink sweets and bullet soul and I want to know why the prices are so crazy for J imports?. I think if I have to drop that much cash I'd rather buy a wii and mod it tp play MAME. It seems deathsmiles and espgaluda are the only affordable shmups for the 360.

Japanese shmupping on the 360 is not cheap, but there are 4-5 US titles which are cheap and a ton of classic shmups on XBLA that are even cheaper. You can still get a lot of bamg for your buck with the 360, and you at least have the option of importing the awesome (but pricey) Cave titles.

Buying a Wii to do MAME seems like a waste to me...

the Wii's version of MAME is crap right now. if you're gonna get a 360 for shmups and have no qualms about modding it then get an old JTAG or look into the "reset glitch" hack for the newer 360's. region free and you can run games straight from the HDD. also MAME360 and FBA.
