I'm sure many of you here have played a version of this fun puzzle game.
But if you haven't, heres hardcoregaming 101's article on it.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/puyo/puyopuyo.htm
For me, its a really hard decision between both genesis and SNES's american versions of Puyo Puyo respectively. It was my first exposure to these fun games. A friend of mine owned the Snes version, Kirby's avalanche. We had fun times playing each other and friends with this game. Afterwards I then came across the same game (figureatively speaking) for Genesis. This version I came to like. Only cause it was all mine.
I'm still waiting for the day when I find Avalanche for cheap. I still play it emulated.
Played the GBA game a lot too. Its one of the first games that I bought for my GBA. You can lose lots of hours on these games if you're not careful.
I've tried some of the original (albeit copied) puyo games and they are enjoyable too. Most are easy to play since its the same concept.
So go ahead and pick your puyo!

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine just because I grew up playing it with my siblings on the Sonic Classics cart for Genesis.

Mean Bean Machine has amazing music.
Puyo Pop Fever on PSP is my usual go-to portable version.

Re: Whats your favorite Puyo Puyo?
Tough choice. I've got Puyo Puyo 2 + 4 (Saturn + DC). Puyo Puyo Fever (DC). Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary (Wii). And Puyo Puyo 7 (PSP).
I'd say my favorite is Puyo Puyo 2 (Puyo Puyo Tsu). But when I'm playing with someone less familiar with the series, Puyo Puyo Fever games are better because they're easier. I 1CC'd Puyo Puyo Fever the first time I played it. TOO EASY.

Well I haven't got any of the japanese ones yet, so I can't say.
I dislike the fever games though. The 3D seems odd and I don't like fever mode anyway.
EDIT:
Wow. Nice collection. 20th anniversary is kinda hard to get last I checked.

I don't have much experience with Puyo Puyo. I've only played Kirby's Avalanche and Puyo Pop for the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Mean Bean Machine of course!
I'm still not sure whether I'm a kid or a squid now.
Re: Whats your favorite Puyo Puyo?
Apples vs Oranges, Chocolate vs. Vanilla, SNES vs Genesis, Kirby's Avalanche vs. The Mean Bean Machine.
Some rivalries will never be settled.
Good times with Avalanche, sending down rains of clear stones onto the CPUs side and make them FEAR my color matching skills
